Why would an average Cuban leave?
What is it about the society that one would choose to leave at least a modicum of social security to go to a nation like the US where such a concept barely registers?
Pros and Cons of Cuban society?

Pros and Cons of Cuban society?
The pro's outweigh the cons in Cuban society when it comes to numbers, but when it comes to the effect of economical living, due to the trade embargo brought against Cuba, many choose to leave, not because they disagree with Cuba & its policies, but out of necessity to survive.

Pros
Planned economy - the Castros could not have survived this long without it.
Cons
Bureaucratic mismanagement of the economy and no workers democracy.

We might take note of the fact that reports are circulating that Raul has announced the Cuban state will layoff 500,000 workers, starting immediately, coincident with easing restrictions on private businesses, private cooperatives etc.
This amounts to 10% of the labor force in Cuba, and I don't know how this can be done over the next 9 months or so without causing tremendous dislocation and privation in the country.
The reports says that the Cuban govt intends to divest itself of all employees save those in essential services, including agriculture, like police, teachers, etc.

I meant more in terms of what average life is like for Cubans. Long lines? Red tape? Low wages? Access to food? Etc.
