Anyone looking for a guide to the contemporary presuppositions of Western Society should read Michael Parenti's Land of Idols: Political Mythology in America.
The chapter on the Victimization of Women is absolute genius!
Sorry to rave about a book, but this is probably Michael Parenti's best work and possibly one the best Marxist books ever written.

His book "God & His Demons" is a great some-what Marxist analysis over fundamentalist religion. I'll make sure to get a copy of this other book as well.

I find one of the best books on Western society to be "a People's History of the United States" by Howard Zinn. Yes, it's history, but it covers much of contemporary society as well.

Eh, all the books mentioned so far are on AMERICAN society. I'd think Europe goes under "Western" too.

Has Parenti ever done anything on Europe in general? The closest I can think of is that book on Caesar, and that's not really relevant.

People's History of the World. Also, Engel's Origins.
