The Butthole Surfers were founded in 1981, in San Antonio. Led by the charismatic and just generally awesome Gibby Haines (the inventor of "Gibbytronics", LOL), they made a name for themselves with their live shows, involving Haines singing through megaphones, images of sex change operations and gore films projected unto screens behind the stage, distributing LSD through the crowd (Scratch Acid's debut performance, which they also played at), and supposedly Haines at one point using a hairbrush to penetrate one of his assistants onstage. This was par for the course for "noisecore" acts at that time, though...their proteges The Jesus Lizard featured a lead singer who would frequently perform in the nude.
Their music is mostly really abrasive noise mixed with psychadelia and Haines' garbled wails and sometimes random jibberish...Locust Abortion Technician is the product of a lot of acid use. Refreshingly non-political, too. They're a great band, and the pride of Texas.
