Where are you from, whats the leftist scene there like?

Well, I'm currently living down here in Tasmania, but haven't really done anything political except from talking ideas with some friends (more like acquaintances) who are members of the Greens Party here. Apart from that, I'm living here in Hobart for personal reasons, so I don't expect to be here for long enough to get settled for politics. To be honest I don't really know much about the politics in this state, apart from that in the last election the Greens managed to form a minority government with Labor, which I guess is 'good' because it stops the Liberals from raping the native forests.

I am originally from Abbotsford (moved to Richmond when I was young) in Melbourne, Victoria. And I do plan to return eventually. 'leftist scene' I guess you could call it is pretty good, at the very least students, professionals, are more supportive of the 'left' side of politics.

What brand of leftism do you subscribe to?

Well I consider myself a socialist, although I've never been a member of a socialist party or organization. I don't want to sound intellectual by fiddling with labels or anything, I support a state run by working people, that's it.

How did you become a leftist?

Haha, well school I guess, like many people (I assume many on this site too) it was Uni where I felt more confident in understanding what I believed in.

I read Critique of the Gotha Program, The Communist Manifesto, The State and Revolution etc during college, which I admit was somewhat frustrating, having a personal revelation without much of an outlet.

I was a member of Young Labor (youth wing of the Australian Labor Party) here in Vic for close to a year, but that itself was a bit of a joke, and relinquished it before turning old enough to be in the ALP proper. It was impossible for me, especially after reading what Lenin wrote about the collusion of the bourgeoisie 'social-democrats' in Germany in WWI, for me to be in a party which was implicitly supporting Australian predatory military actions in Afghanistan and Iraq.

Apart from that, I'm not politically active, don't really know many people down here in Tassie. I still hold membership and dues with the Australian Workers' Union (AWU), but that's just for employment purposes not politics really.

I'm ashamed I wasn't in Melbourne for the (semi) recent Federal election, which gave the Greens there first member in Federal Parliament, but I know some people who leafleted for Bandt. I considered joining the Greens Party, and I would like to say to anyone here that from my experience they are not reactionary or anything. They have there hearts in the right place, but their emphasis and where their 'heads' are is completely different to me.

Sorry for being so long and if you dozed off. Would be great to contribute to some discussions around here.

Visited Hobart earlier this year. I couldn't handle the dullness and dreariness of the place. I'm sure you like it better than I did, though. Welcome :)

Ha, well I can't argue with that, it was a huge change of pace for me, I was surprised to see how small the actual inner-city part of Hobart is, and how few people are about. I'm in North Hobart, which funnily enough has a main street with an old style post office, restaurants, and this private school near where I live, it reminds me of parts of Melbourne actually.

I think I'm just going to read this forum a bit before posting.

Welcome :)

There are quite a few socialist parties around in Australia, although all quite small. You were never attracted to that?
