Immolation, Incantation, Autopsy, Nihilist, Dismember, Demilich, Convulse, Morpheus Descends, Suffocation, Cartilage, Master...

What I love about this type of music is that, unlike most other popular genres, it doesn't bother trying to be "political" or making linear and catchy tunes - instead, songs blast off directly into the abstract, surreal, otherworldly, much like classic sci-fi and horror movies where reality is distorted, making the movie shocking, awe-inspiring and intellectually stimulating for the viewer.

Darkthrone - The Watchtower

Nocturnal flight, no shadows cast
a distant symbol of our beyond
life lies in front of us
Sacred Ground, Rotten Earth
Ashes To Dust
Flesh Decomposed
Caressing the sacred ground
where the deadened corpses lie
A sepulchral misty night
with a whiff of the Macabre
Silently watching the stones
put there as a symbol of death
Our minds united; A force is lit,
and insight creates
A humanoid watchtower, reaching for
their souls to the Sky
For a glance onto
The Other Side...

Demilich - The Planet that Once Used to Absorb Flesh in Order to Achieve Divinity and Immortality (Suffocated to the Flesh that it Desired...)

A silent forsaken planet
Its pores full of flesh
It once used to be alive
Now dead, condemned to loneliness
Lying in space, completely alone
Covered with tons and tons of piles of bone

The former master of the Universe and its stars
The former master died its cover full of scars
Its core has gotten cool, the greed has shown fatality
No more absorbing, no consuming, it will never reach immortality

Akercocke is more Prog-DM, but this is as close to Old School Death Metal I listen to.

Funnily, Unquestionable Presence was the album that got me into Jazz Fusion and Jazz, which is what got me into the more experimental artists of Post-Hardcore Screamo ~.~

Oh, yeah, Atheist are cool, can't wait to hear their new album.

You should definitely check out Nocturnus too - really cool old school tech death.

Atheist is sooooo good. Unquestionable Presence blows my mind everytime. "And the Psychic Saw" is my favorite song, but the solo in "Your Lifes Retribution" is so epic.

As good as Death is, my favorite album is Symbolic. I hear a lot of people saying they love Chuck's early albums, but I think Symbolic is just perfect. Every time I listen to it, I hear something new, I appreciate something new. It's a very awesome album, with nice diverse elements thrown in.

You should definitely check out Nocturnus too - really cool old school tech death.
Thank you x 10000. I forgot about them. Thresholds is good. I need to get their discography.

In my opinion, the best two bands in this genre.

By some act of Higher Mercy I've found my Pestilence CD, "Consuming Impulse" album.
Boy what a mind-blower. It was pure chance that was necessary for me to remember how I love that "primitive", raw, "punch-you-in-the-face" style.
And the vocal work. Tormented and surreal. Unlike the new boys (well, some of the older boys pioneered deep guttural style) who seem to compete with each other, the prize being "the best gigantic alien frog from outer space". I'm quite dissatisfied with relentless blastbeats and that kind of vocal work.

Which reminds me, off I go to find some old Benediction CDs

Although the band formed in 2003, so technically not old school, the style they play is straight from the late 80's. Probably the best metal band to form in the 00's.

I sometimes like listening to metal but I always feel silly afterwards because these are usually some fucking suburbanites trying to get mommies attention by putting on clown makeup, talking about nazis and satan.
