Who got the copyright for these movies back then and today? The people? Stalin?^^ Putin? The State?
Internet didn't made me wiser, so perhaps you comrades can help.

i assume on the whole film the director.
than its in the case of russia 70 years after the date of death of the director the directors heirs (50 years if the director died before 1953)

after that the copyrights are void.
so in the case of potemkin and oktober i assume they are copyright free since 1998 since eisenstein died in 1948

i assume on the whole film the directorNot necessarily. Prior to the collapse of the USSR, the state may well have owned the copyright. This may have since been released or sold on (as with Tetris). Its a good question though from the OP but I doubt the answer will be straightforward
