So, I was looking at Netflix's suggestions for me based on films that I've rated, and I came across this:

What a great suggestion! I loved the Daria series when it was running. I'm just wondering how Netflix arrived at such a suggestion.

Here's an image Ulrike Meinhoff:

Here's Daria:

Both are fairly good looking in a sort of nerdy way. I know Ulrike was a leftist, and I'd guess that Daria would be as well. They both are intellectual and challenging of authority, but Daria is a bit more cynical.

I guess I'm just fascinated that Netflix would think that I like one because I like the other.

Anyone have cool stories about Daria, the RAF, or Netflix?

Holy shit. Daria's on DVD?

Anyway, in one episode Daria wrote a short story that basically ended with a bunch of communists being killed, which sparked a spontaneous anti-communist riot conducted by the towns people. I think she has more in common with the new Skeptics movement (due to her blasé-sense of skepticism and cultural disinterest) than any left-wing ideology.

Fuck you, dude. You stole my post.:p

To the OP: I'd never bothered to actually look up any photos of Ulrike. Now that you mention it, she is quite the archetype of the foxy nerd in a Tina Fey sorta way.

As far as Netflix goes, I wouldn't put much stock in it. The bulk of their recommendations have shifted toward what's available for streaming, so I'd be willing to wager that Daria's available in that format. They're trying to push people away from actual disc rental because streaming's cheaper.

I figure that eventually they'll go 100% streaming, which is bullshit for two reasons. Firstly, their streaming service doesn't come with closed captioning or subtitle options for their English language movies. If they do go 100% streaming without adding that option, I can smell the ADA (Americans with Disabilities Act) lawsuit a mile off as the service will be functionally useless for the hard of hearing. The Woman, for instance, suffered some hearing loss as a child, so this is a huge problem for her.

Secondly, I can't stand the streaming service as is either. One of the primary reasons I got Netflix in the first place was because I lived in a shitty little town with shitty chain movie rental stores. I wanted to be able to get my hands on art films, indies, and ancient foreign language stuff. Having tastes that are skewed that way means I like the occasional interview with a film historian or commentary track explaining the symbolism and choices the director/writer(s) employed. All that stuff is on the bonus features of DVDs, which the streaming service doesn't include either.

Lulzy... I knew what you meant, though. I've probably seen every episode of that show at least twice.
