Racist governor candidate Tim James wants English sole language of the United States, since, "in Alabama, we speak English:

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=eEPh_KlTyII

Who the fuck is "we"??? last time I looked, and even where I grew up, people spoke more Russian, Spanish, and Vietnamese than English. many of my cousins have legal right to be here, but can't speak English at all. what happens to them?

seriously, Anyone who doesn't see this "English only" ad as a thinly veiled attack on immigrants, particularly those of a certain brown color, is blind to society.

Fuck Tim James.

Isn't it funny how these people hate "liberal professors" who use big words? And how the British are the only ones who speak English right?

I've learned this a long time ago: "we" in American political discourse almost always refers to rich white people, nothing else. Everything darker and poorer is the "them".

As they say in Brazil, que se fodam os gringos.

Actually standard North American English is closer to the English spoken before they split.

It is surprising to me how similar that guy seems to an evil Bond villain, you can see and hear the hate behind his words. Yet he is a 'big politician' apparently. Seems like there is very much thinly-veiled hate in parts of USA.

Lol, I remember when I first saw this. Pretty typical for Alabama. This is what most white people in the state sound like.

except that Bond Villians don't have a "clean cut fascist" look, shitty political messages, and usually are pretty badass?

lol, Putin is a bond villian. the guy killed a white tiger about to maul a cameraman, and saved a woman from a lake who was drowning, is a black belt in Judo, and knows how to fly a jet. lol

He want to save money, then break off of the whole of US. Break off from the Iraq and Afghanistan wars.

But of course, next time it's saving money by stopping the building of mosques, and then Mexican foods, and then the papers that has all the information about you (i.e., stopping immigrants), and then, when he has all the money he need, they will - to save money - change the Alabaman flag into that red one with the round circle and the reverse Tibetan symbol inside of it (because, why spend all those money on complicated flag making).

And while he's at it, he could save not only money but even people by jumping off the highest peak in Alabama.

since most Americans in the South are self-hating lumpenproletariat, he's trying to show his credentials as a predatory capitalist who'll do what he can to turn America into a corporate fascist state (as if that wasn't what it was already).

Mississippi is the most impoverished state in America. it's also one of the most socially and fiscally conservative. they have a strong opinion against all forms of unionization, often favor candidates who are strongly against social welfare (again, despite being the poorest state in America) and have the most bigoted policies against illegal immigrants.

this proves it enough.

This does not make them "lumpenproletariat".

I never understood the reason why some people are so afraid of foreign languages. Let's assume that US schools, from the lowest grades, teach at least Spanish. What possible negative impact could there be from bi-lingual children?

"lumpenproletariat" is a social class based on the relationship with the means of production, not social consciousness. try again.

e. Lumpenproletariat. Marx also mentions the "dangerous class" or the social scum. Among the members of this group are "ruined and adventurous offshoots of the bourgeoisie, vagabonds, discharged soldiers, discharged jailbirds .. pickpockets, brothel keepers, rag-pickers, beggars" etc. (Bottomore, p. 292). This is the lumpenproletariat. He does not consider this group to be of any importance in terms of potential for creating socialism, if anything they may be considered to have a conservative influence. Other writers and analysts have considered them to have some revolutionary potential. One of the main reasons for mentioning them is to emphasize how capitalism uses, misuses and discards people, not treating them as humans. Today's representative of this class of lumpenproletariat are the homeless and the underclass.

Except it's hard to believe that all these poor people are homeless and an "underclass."

I'm not a violent person, but shit like this makes me believe I could be. Pisses me off so much:cursing:

...So I get so worked up and frustrated, the only way I can calm down is by fantasizing bad things happening to this guy.

...Then again, I haven't been exposed to much real violence in my life, so if I actually saw this guy say for example, get shot in the face or something, I'd probably feel bad for him, in spite of everything.

I'm such a pussy.

Candidates running on openly anti-illegal immigrant platforms is nothing new in the south (especially), but it does begin to take on a new form when it is obviously anti-hispanic.

I'm waiting for the supreme court case when we find out if the first amendment only guarantees freedom of speech in english. Don't laugh.

The problem is not a foreign language; the problem here is racism, pure and simple. It's white people scared of brown people like us.

Well, nothing. Assumimg the Sapir-Whorf hypothesis is true, knowledge of more than one language is actually beneficial. It basically increases the ability to solve complex problems. Soooo, yeah... ignorance is bliss I suppose?

I love the whole attempt to appeal to the right wing voters with "maybe it's the businessman in me", however he has shown he would make a pretty poor businessman amongst many other things. If a business is catering to customers who speak a wide number of languages, what will it typically do?

Disgustingly racist ad by Republican governor candidate in Alabama Racist governor candidate Tim James wants English sole language of the United States, since, "in Alabama, we speak English:

I have actually been able to watch the add as Youtube is banned in this country, but as I understand it the guy is promoting the English language. Now the 'English only' movement is obviously a racist movement, but the point about racism today is that it is a lot more subtle than it used to be, and is that 'disgusting'. In fact the very point of it is that it comes across as reasonable to many people who it appeals to who get pulled along by a racist campaign despite not thinking of them selves of as racists.

Thus the current campaign against Muslims talks about them 'wanting to take away our free speech', and oppressing women. It doesn't say, in public at least, "let's kick the darkies out". The whole point of racism today is that it is not 'disgusting', but tries to paint itself as 'reasonable'.

If you want really disgusting racism you have to go back a few years to find it speaking its name openly. I am sure there are many examples from the US, but I will offer one from Europe. The UK Conservative Party, not a small fringe party but one of the two major political parties, ran an election campaign with billboard posters and the slogan "If you want a nigger for a neighbour, vote Labour".

For what it's worth, the primaries were a while back and he lost. Supposedly the AEA (Alabama Education Association) were backing the other Republican in the primary. In the current political climate down here, "unions" such as the AEA (yes I quote that for a reason) are forced to choose what they think is the lesser evil of the two main Republican candidates, as electing a Democrat would be virtually impossible.

Yes I live in Alabama.

Piece of Trivia: Alabama was once a focal point of Communism in the US. You can read their amazing stories in Hammer and Hoe: Alabama Communists during the Great Depression.
