This is an issue that has always puzzled and confused me, and once again it has come back into the public's eye is that of the Romani, particularly in Europe.

t seems even those who might hold some progressive views seem to have a negative view of these people. Mostly it always comes back to what they see as crime, of them being vagabonds, etc. I remember watching a BBC documentary a while back (This World: Gypsy Child Thieves) about how organized crime uses their communities.

I often find myself at a loss against those who see them as the ultimate evil, especially since this issue ties closely with that of immigration, which is another hot topic in many nations, European ones included. It's become something that all segments of main stream political thought in the European nations jump onto bash.

And on a side note- what was the policy of the Soviet Union and the former eastern bloc towards Romani people?

It's German, but this book is quite good:

Explores a lot of historic reasons for cultural resentment of so-called "gipsy" groups.
