View Full Version : Catholic Worker Movement?

I've been reading up on Catholic Worker Movement and I'm thinking of contacting a local chapter to volunteer. Although I'm not a Catholic (but I had a Catholic upbringing), I want to get involved helping the poorer folks in my neighborhood and there's a CWM branch not far from me in Philly.

Anyway, I was wondering if anyone here had info on the CWM. I've heard a lot of good things online but I want to learn a bit more before I commit, and I've already spoken to a CWM volunteer, but I'd like to hear praise/criticism from someone not connected to the organization. Unfortunately, the CWM is pretty obscure in my neighborhood, and the few locals who know about it are of the stubborn Tea Party variety (I loathe to admit that my working-class, largely union-supporting neighborhood is home to some of those cretins).

Note -- This is my first post, so if I'm posting this thread in the wrong forum, let me know.

I hope they would have a progressive stance on LGBT rights, otherwise a certain amount of intra-working class antagonism may be unavoidable.

That's a good question. I don't know the answer, but my guess is that if they think certain personal moral behaviors are a "sin" they probably still oppose any attacks on those individuals or groups as well as legislation and discrimination by the state.

I'm also curious about their take on the official catholic church. It would be easy to argue that matters of personal choice should not be regulated by the state even if a religion is against these choices, but it seems to be a contradiction to then be part of a religion that promotes oppression.

How is Chip banned? It says that this is his only post and yet it states banned under his name? Here is the wiki along with the site for the CWM

I personally believe that charity has its place, and that pure charity (not the bullshit for every set of fries sold at McDonald's we donate xx cents to Africa) is what inspires the revolution. Kindness among workers is what inspires unity among them and against their oppressors.

As for the lgbt question I found this :http://www.catholicworker.org/communities/Commdetail.cfm?Community=129

But the CWM is made up of many different autonomous groups so I guess it really depends on what the people around you are like.
