I've been to protests where the police wouldn't allow us to use pickets because the sticks could be used as a weapon.

I agree with the first part of this sentiment. However, to say that nationalism is irrelevant today ignores the rise of right reactionary groups and ideas in the West. The Bay Area National Anarchists are but one group among many anti-immigrant, white nationalist, right wing organizations popping up in the United States and GB, and while they may be the smallest said group, their sentiment is echoed and supported by all the other fascist bastards here.

Two bay area anarchists are currently facing felony charges for assaulting BANA members. In that situation, the nationalists were explicitly protected by SF police. It is of course totally unsurprising that the state should allow them to terrorize whoever they feel like with their ridiculous tactics.

BANA (and national anarchism in general) is pretty much a joke but they take themselves very seriously and for that reason alone are capable of doing an incredible amount of damage. It is important to confront, demoralize, and destroy them utterly as a group because at this stage in their development delivering such a crippling blow is well within reasonable possibility. They are also essentially a "soft target" relative to most fascist groups, with a good deal of media visibility due to their iconoclastic image, and actions against them could be very useful as cheap propaganda for building the street credibility of real anarchism.
