Hello to all those we met last weekend at the Veterans for Peace Convention in Portland, ME. Elaine Brower and I hosted a discussion of the Tea Party & the Anti-War Movement, during which we learned a great deal. Thanks to Ethan McCord and Joe Urgo for presenting at the We Are Not Your Soldiers workshop sponsored there by World Can't Wait. Once again, we introduced 60 people to the Collateral Murder film, and distributed all the copies we brought along. More copies are in production. If you want one, write me.

I watched Obama's "New Dawn" speech last night in an airport with two guys in the National Guard who were on their way home from training. One had been deployed in Iraq in 2004, during the assault on Fallujah. I showed him the photos stored in my laptop, just downloaded from the New York Times photo retrospective on the war. He said, "These are messed up, but you don't even want to know how bad we messed up those people. We acted like they weren't human."

Robert Gates, the Bush/Obama defense secretary said yesterday in Iraq, that American combat troops "have accomplished something really quite extraordinary here, how it all weighs in the balance over time I think remains to be seen," acknowledging that the way the war started has something to do with why it's controversial in the U.S. With the passage of time, the illegitimacy of the war based on lies, and of the continued, permanent occupation, should be something our movement never forgets.

Andy Worthington in The Legacy of the Iraq War: Over 100,000 Dead, 20,000 Unidentified:

There is so much that is appalling about the last seven and a half years - the Abu Ghraib scandal, the murder of Manadel al-Jamadi and other deaths in US custody, horrendous war crimes, the shocking rise in the number of refugees, both within Iraq (1.55 million) and also, primarily, in Syria and Jordan (2 million), the destruction of Fallujah, the plundering of Iraq's economy, the rise of Blackwater, the profits for the warmongers at Halliburton and elsewhere - but most of all I feel for those who have lost their lives: the US soldiers sacrificed for the greed and folly of a few, and the largely unacknowledged Iraqi civilians, whose deaths were sidelined from the very beginning of the war, when Gen. Tommy Franks declared, callously, "We don't do body counts."

Iraq vet: "I'm here because I think I can give some hope to these soldiers, especially if they want to resist... You don't have to go and murder people if you don't want to. You can stand up. These feelings and these doubts that you're having, they are legitimate feelings. And don't ever let those feelings go away. Because that's when you lose your humanity. Hopefully we can change some minds today."
We Oppose Attacks on Muslims & Mosques, Now and in the Future: Grief is NO Excuse for Bigotry & War

Time magazine asked last week, "Is the U.S. Islamophobic?" They covered screaming mobs outside sites of planned mosques in New York and Tennessee. Since then, a taxi driver in New York was slashed with a knife by a passenger who asked, "Are you Muslim?" Construction equipment at a mosque under construction in Mufreesboro Tennessee was burned, and shots were fired near the site. A supporter said the vandalism "'takes it to a whole new level… Everyone in our community no longer feels safe."

According to the New York Times yesterday, "A group of teenagers in western New York has been accused of harassing members of a mosque by yelling obscenities and insults during evening prayers for Ramadan, sideswiping a worshiper with a vehicle and firing a shotgun outside, the authorities said Tuesday."

No, most people living in the U.S. don't hate people because they are Muslim. But there's a dangerous movement, nurtured by Fox News, parts of the Republican Party, Glenn Beck and others who believe 1) the president is Muslim and/or hates white people; 2) Muslim=terrorist and not "real" American, or in other words, "white Christian."

The group massed in front of the so-called "Ground Zero" mosque on August 22; the armed crowd at the Arizona border to Mexico threatening people who provide aid to immigrants; and the large crowd parked at the Lincoln Monument to hear Glenn Beck Saturday share these sentiments, and are being led to act on them. Free Gregory Koger! Videotaping is not a crime - Gregory should do no time!

After 9 months of vengeful and unrelenting pursuit of a conviction by the Cook County (Illinois) State's Attorney and the Ethical Humanist Society of Chicago (EHSC), videographer Gregory Koger was found guilty on August 26th of trespass, resisting a police officer, and battery for the "crime" of videotaping a brief but newsworthy statement by Sunsara Taylor at the EHSC.

Gregory was maced and brutalized during the arrest, and this was acknowledged by police at trial, yet he was the one charged and now found guilty.

The courtroom was continually packed with supporters of Gregory who were stunned and outraged by the verdict. Then the judge furthered this shameful persecution by taking the almost unprecedented step of revoking bond after a misdemeanor conviction. Gregory was taken directly from the courtroom to the Cook County Jail until sentencing on September 8. He could be sentenced to substantial time in jail.

Gregory's lawyer, Scott Frankel said, "I am unbelievably disappointed with the verdict and I know we will appeal. Gregory is a fine man and does not deserve this. I was stunned by the Court's decision to revoke Gregory's bond." A motion for an order to reinstate Gregory's bond will be filed immediately.

PLEASE sign this petition immediately, and share with friends. You can spread the word through Facebook as well.

UPDATE: Bradley Manning has selected a civilian lawyer to head up his legal team.

Join the International Days of Action in Solidarity with Bradley Manning September 16-19. Find or organize a protest, event, or fundraiser for Manning.

Write to Bradley with your support:

Hundreds, if not thousands, of individuals have sent mail to Bradley at Quantico, and to Kuwait before that. Due to a strict interpretation of confinement facility regulations, Bradley has not received a single letter, and most letters have been returned to sender.

This collective effort, however, has not been in vain. The brig understands that many, many individuals are concerned about Bradley, and this offers some level of protection against informal physical abuse by guards and other inmates. Also, Bradley has been notified that he is receiving an "avalanche of fan mail". Brig authorities have told Bradley that 75% of all mail received by the brig in the last month has been addressed to him.

Going forward, send letters to Bradley c/o Courage to Resist, 484 Lake Park Ave #41, Oakland CA 94610. They will open these letters, discard any "contraband", and mail them in a weekly package to Bradley. Bradley will receive this envelope from an individual currently on his approved brig correspondence list.
