Oil Rig Leaking After Explosion: Another Gulf Oil Spill?

The Coast Guard is reporting that a mile-long oil sheen is spreading from the site of today's oil rig explosion in the Gulf of Mexico, according to the Associated Press.

The location of the rig, as seen in the graphic above, is about 200 miles west of BP's Deepwater Horizon rig. Thirteen workers were present during the explosion, but all are still alive and were spotted floating in the water wearing emergency gear called gumby suits.

A commercial helicopter first spotted the explosion, the cause of which is still being investigated early Thursday afternoon. (See dramatic photos of history's biggest oil spills)

Luckily, there's some good news: Even if the situation becomes severe, the cleanup process would be much easier on this platform than during the BP debacle. The AP reports that this well was dug in shallow water, unlike BP's rig, and this makes cleaning oil off the ocean floor much simpler.

During an initial flyover of the area, officials did not spot any oil spilling, though this new sheen may change reports.

Fucking bullshit this is. It should be abundantly clear that offshore drilling is bad news for Americans after this happened TWICE in ONE SUMMER in the same area. What are people going to say about this one, they can't say it's because it was in deep water because it was in shallow water.

I'm sort of glad this event happened just as BP and the Obama administration were starting to pacify the popular outlash against the original oil spill.

what company owned this one? just curious. i hope its not BP so this will bring attention to yet another Oil company to help broaden the discontent with capitalist oil production.

Apparently Mariner Energy (http://www.mariner-energy.com/) owned the rig. Let's send them angry e-mails. :D

thanks. if it were BP im sure it would lead to tougher restrictions on them but it would only isolate the seeming cause of the problem to the fault of one man or one company, not a whole system.

Beginning to think the oil companies are trolling the Gulf of Mexico.

hmm... so how many more times does this have to happen until the government stops protecting big oil... lol, what am I saying... hell... big oil owns the government through political donations (the legal form of bribing) and special interest... nothing is going to change because of this or any other accident that is going to happen... and if we as a people try to stop it, we'll just be dubbed via rhetoric and be tossed to the wayside...
