I have never agreed with anything on revleft more than I agree with this.

The left is filled with most awkward, socially inept, nerds that I have ever met, and it is so rare to meet a revolutionary who I would ever hang out with.

The kid who I hang out with more than anyone is a communist. We don't talk about politics that often though, and when we do it's mostly just making intentionally lame socialist jokes.

All the communists I know are cool to hang around with. Though a lot of non-socialist political people I know are too in your face about politics (especially extremely misanthropic ultra-environmentalists).

Same here, in real life most of the progressive activists I've met who may or may not recognize that the Democrats are really not doing shit will still continue voting for them as if they can stop the reaction/GOP in American electoral politics.

Most socialists I know in real life are pretty normal people. Only one of my closests friends is a socialist and he's your typical student, he's on basketball team and has a pretty healthy social life.

As for the socially inept nerd, maybe you should give the nerd a chance? I mean, everyone has their flaws, we should embrace all members of the movement. We both know that it's not going to change anytime soon.

Why would I want to hang out with somebody who is just not cool? He'd probably wanna talk about the labor theory of value all day or something.

I think ya'll are either lying, or just as nerdy as the people I'm talking about, in my almost 10 years on the left, I have found that most people totally live up to the cultural stereotype of a "left-winger".

You'd be surprised, some radicals know how to have a good time. I mean how many of these lefties have you actually made a point of hanging out with?

It may just be my area but I've met a few Marx nerds who talk about music and life far more than Marxist theory.

anarchist/autonomist squatters know how to party, sometimes a bit too good.

its why i'm imagining the dutch secret service, although we use far less violence than the extreme right, seem too see us as the bigger threat. we are radical but also know how to party, conect to normal people and be solidair so our potential to become big in short amounts of time is far greater.

Agreed but out here thats pretty much exclusive to the punk scene and I'm pretty over hanging out with punks for the most part.

i think your being an bit UScentric, over here there most squatters admititly like punk but they are by far not all punks.
we have family's, old hippies, lawyers, techno's, artists and god knows what else in the scene around here.

The Douche

Yeah, thats why I said "out here", but I mean, we have plenty of people who are not punks, but I've never had extended relationships with any of those people. And I've met far less of them. And I don't think I would have much fun with them either (but they are probably relatively normal people and not socially backwards like other revolutionary types)

Sometimes I feel like most communists out there are even nerdier than the objectivists. Hate to bring race into it but most white leftists I've met have been pretty true to the stereotype of the uptight humorless nerd. To be fair a lot of black radicals fall into the trap of being NOIish proud to be Black or making things that have nothing to do with racism out to be racist buy still the last cool leftist group who I'd actually enjoy chilling with were definitely the black panthers so weve got that. But yeah I dont hang out alot with any really political people, and the few times I've tried to organize with "activists" it's been an exercise in frustration for many many reasons.

It really depends. The stereotype of communists used to be true to some extent, but I don't think it's really like that any more. Of course, I'm speaking as an insider, so perhaps I'm looking at things with rose-tinted glasses, but I'd say the really nerdy types are in the minority. And even if people like that want to join, I'd say they're more than welcome. I don't judge, but I do hope that getting active gives them the opportunity to get a bit more out of their lives.

Anyway, this kind of thing does strongly relate to your political activities. I think it's no coincidence that we have the most success in places where we're actually able to reach out to people by showing real solidarity. For instance, taking part in a squatted social centre in one part of the country, and strongly supporting a union project somewhere else. In both cases, we don't march in and demand that everybody listen to us, and we don't try to coup the whole project. We just participate, consistently show solidarity, and slowly build up prestige and respect. Honesty and true solidarity is something that is vastly underrated on the left. The people whom we work with in those projects know that we don't have preparatory meetings on how we're going to coup them, because we actually don't do that, so there's no need to be sneaky and secretive. It's a cliché, but honesty does work.

I'd say the opposite of this is a certain other group of activists who don't feel that way at all. At least where I work, they constantly try to undermine things like the unionist project and actively try to coup them. I think at this point, anyone from the Netherlands probably knows who I'm talking about.

As for anarchists, psycho is probably right to some extent, although of course you have different types of them. Unfortunately, I don't know too many anarchists here, but many of them seem cool enough. Of course, there are also different kinds. For instance, my sister knows this one guy who smells really bad and constantly berates her for voting in elections, because elections are bad. Yeah, that works. But I think (and hope) that people like that are the exception to the rule.

Wanted Man
5th September 2010, 22:36
Are you sure that you belong to a Leninist organization?

There is only one organisation in the Netherlands that does this (Leninist or otherwise), and they're the equivalent of the ISO. From the Dutch point of view, it's a trait of IS-tendency organisations, not Leninist per se. Of course, the IS are larger and noisier than all the others, so it's understandable if people are inclined to think this is a Leninist, Trotskyist, or even generally rev-left thing. That's exactly why such tactics are so damaging.

We have our own opinions about unions and other organisations, but no, we don't conspire to take them over (whereas anyone who is active in the Netherlands probably knows for a fact that the IS do). What's the point of a "mass organisation" full of yes-men, where the real "mass" element has already left in disgust long ago? Besides this utilitarian argument against that kind of practice, there's also such a thing as respect and ethics. One very annoying thing about the more "aggressive" types of radicals is their sheer arrogance and sense of entitlement. Like a guy who bursts in, drinks all your beers, then leaves by car and says, "See you next weekend!" Just not cool.
