to save oil in a pan over the course of a day?
this morning i fried 2 eggs. (to make sandwiches)
lunch i made pierogis.
now im making hasbrowns.
all with the same oil.
is that bad or is it just fine? i found it saves oil and builds flavor.

Not at all, I'm Russian, and we basically have an underground economy ran on old bacon fat and drippings. don't worry though, it's oil, oil doesn't go bad, it's safe to consume.

Olive oil is good for a few days if cooking vegan things. If you're cooking eggs and such it might spoil sooner.

Sounds like a good idea. I love building up flavors in pans and oils - I have one pan I only make ramen in, and sometimes I go a month just letting the seasoning build up in the pan before washing it.

nice. with ramen, what i like to do is put a small handful of frozen mixed veggies in. it loses some flavor, but the way you cook might help.

I've tried that a few times, but the only suitable veggie mix I have has shitty lima beans in it. Plus it's impossible to get the veggies sufficiently mixed in with the noodles, so I end up having a pool of disgusting green beans stewing at the bottom of my bowl. :D

The reason I ask is I mentioned the word vegan in my post and the very next post said fuck you and bacon and sourcream so I had no idea what to think.

yeah i always spat those damn lima beans out.
i hate em so much.
i ususally microwave my ramen with barely enough water so i can save flavor but it doesnt help once you throw frozen veggies in :(

I tried to compensate by throwing in some salt and soy sauce... THAT is a bad idea.
asparagus makes any dish good.
But of course.

salt is a no go with it. its already 90% salt.
i did try some seasoning like those bottles of diced dried onions, garlic powder and parsley or something. it was o.k.
and asparagus? i always hated it as a child and never got over that. i should probably try that.

Asparagus is really good by itself in olive oil.

It is safe - we've always done this in my family. We have an old oil bottle, and after using a lot of oil we just pour the previous oil into that bottle. We then recycle the oil later for things that don't require fresh oil or whose flavor won't be ruined - for example for browning meat that is later used in stews.

So is spinach. (But it's better with cubed tofu thrown in)

Perogies are bomb, and I'll say they're Russian, even though there is ample evidence to prove that they are indeed, Polish.

That's my plan. Once I vegan-ize the recipe, these will constitute half my dinner tonight.
Thanks for the info, everyone.

I was looking up a vegan perogi recipe after fa2991 mentioned it, and this one sounds pretty good:
http://www.vegan-food.net/recipe/182/Pierogies/
But yes, do post your recipe, homemade recipes are usually quite awesome!

It's not that hard to make almost all kind of bakery vegan, but you need to experiment a bit.
Replace eggs with soy flour; not sure how much you'll need, but a few spoons per egg should give a similar consistency.
Replace butter with margarine (doh).
Replace sour cream with tofu sour cream, or make your own from soy yogurt or soy milk.

 I appreciate the interest, but I don't know how good these will turn out, as I'll probably have to fabricate vegan sour cream out of soy milk (without tofu).

I used leftace's recipe, but modified it a little to cater to what I had on hand.
I used a little under a half a cup of garlic powder instead of a garlic clove and sauteed dried minced onions - enough to sort of thickly coat the pan did it for me. I used diced medium-large potatoes and boiled them for about 33 minutes. I didn't take the skins off, but most of the skin fell of while boiling - probably a sign that I overcooked the potatoes. :D
I also ended up having to make a triple order of the dough because the recipe produced SO MUCH potato mixture. I recommend that you use small potatoes if you're going to make this.
They're refrigerating now so the dough will harden. I'll boil and fry them in about a half hour. :thumbup1:

if you make them vegan, you'll ruin them though! Perogies are meant to be eaten with a ground meat, and a heaping pile of bacon bits on top (well, depends if you're from Poland, Ukraine, etc.), and a large mug of beer.

 Even the non-vegan recipes of it I saw online didn't have meat. Whatever.

Not everyone eats everything the same.
I like Ramen, I make it with corn & Knorr's Vegetable Bouillan. Delicious. :thumbup1:

I mix lentils with boiled egg yolks. No big.
I believe they are traditionally eaten with meat inside, however I used to eat the cheese/potato one at school, and like that better so I posted the recipe for that one.

To replace water or to replace the flavor packet...?
Also, I finished 4 pastries and they're great. Like garlic hash browns wrapped in fried dumplings.
They look suspiciously like fried chicken thighs, actually. :bored:

The flavor packet. My girlfriend gets chicken & beef, I steal the noodles. =]
