There are reports of hate crimes against Muslims — including this major incident in NYC. The racist anti-Muslim slasher in this case went for the neck and came close to killing the cabbie.

Talk of “sacred ground” is the theory, this attempted murder is the practice.

Such a climate and such acts inevitably put fear into communities being targeted — and underscores again the importance of acting in open, forceful, unmistakable solidarity.

Immediately excuses and confusion were injected into the air: The slasher was depicted as a good guy in many accounts (after all he was a documentarian who had been embedded with “our troops”!), and as someone who may have been traumatized by his experiences in Afghanistan (after all, what should you do after participating in a colonial war but try to kill the colonialized?), he was drunk (in vino veritas?) and so on.

N.Y. Cab Driver Stabbed After Muslim Identity Was Questioned

The drunken passenger that posed the inquiry has been arrested on charges of attempted murder as a hate crime.

Michael Enright, 21, hailed a cab on Monday night on Manhattan’s east side. Sharif, if he was Muslim. Sharif responded with a yes, prompting the intoxicated Enright to allegedly pull out a pocket knife tool, reach for the driver’s seat and slash him. New York Police Department spokeswoman Kim Royster told the wire service that Sharif was treated for gashes to his throat, upper lip, forearm and thumb. The New York Taxi Workers Alliance identified Sharif by name, and in a related news release, added that the confrontation “occured amid tension” over plans for the new cultural center and mosque near Ground Zero. Within that same document, Sharif, who has served 15 years as a cab driver, expressed sadness over the current climate his profession is facing.

All the while I think the rest of the peanut gallery is holding their 8/28 rally over at Lincoln Memorial...

When shit like this is happening, along with incidents elsewhere (say in Murfreesboro, Tennessee, in Sheboygan WI, or Temecula, CA) it's hard for people to fall back and say this angst is purely motivated by people "concerned" about the location. There are other factors at play here and the media has certainly played a role in it.

These kinds of things are being unleashed for a reason- along with the coverage that was over the 14th amendment debates and the Arizona bills, so that certain groups can charge up their constituents to come out and vote for them in November.
