It's worth noting where there pressures are coming from for males to conform to these standards, and what lies behind them. Militaries shave fresh recruits as part of the "tear 'em down and build 'em back up" process. Capitalists demand short hair and beards (if facial hair is allowed at all) as a sign of workers' willingness to submit to authority. And then there's sexual pressure from females (though I got more attention when I had long hair in high school).

Where does this all come from? I've heard some interesting hypotheses. One speculated that defeated warriors in ancient times would have their beards and long hair cut off to humiliate and emasculate them, and that this became symbolic of docile males, so females began selecting men who were willing to conform to this standard and who seemed therefore more likely to help with child-rearing.

Whatever the case, it seems today that only rebellious, non-conformist males get away with long hair and beards (e.g., rock stars, outlaw bikers, dissident professors, etc.). The rest of us have been symbolically gelded.

I had long hair and a lumberjack beard in high school. My hair was impossible to clean without using a bottle and a half of shampoo. My beard was kinda itchy, but I found it worst that things would always get stuck in it. So, no more beard and my hair is shorter. Medium length hair and a few days growth is the true revolutionary ideal for keeping personal appearances. (also happens to be what I have right now, perchance)
