Looking for an answer to the argument that if the United States, was to be divided into communes that China or other countries would attack and take over the US.

Also an answer to the argument that if the world divided into communes, states would inevitably be created later on.

Uh, what's the evidence to support this proposition?

Communism won't be achieved until the whole world is free so I don't see how this is relevant.

Yeah, but communes could certainly exist pre-communism.

Good point.

Communes will be defended by the people then to properly answer the ops question.

Your interlocutor certainly thinks that dividing into communes means also permanent isolation of them. Firstly, I would tell him that communes will associate themselves into larger federations to cooperate, share products and help each in hard situations like external invasion. I think it's hard to create the state in equal and unpatriotic society, but unfortunately it's possible (as any transition from one system to another), so if we ever will live in anarchy / lib-communism, we must still fight against possibility of inequality, injury, power accumulation etc.

That's something I've been pondering lately, myself. If we're talking about an anarchist society (which I'm assuming we are) armed militias would have to be highly skilled and diverse and in their training outside of simplying carrying a gun or two. They're going to need to learn how to use tanks, aircraft, artillery, etc. but such expertise and practice will take a very long time to master. If you can coax former military men into joining and training the militias, then you might just have a chance.

In my personal opinion, you would need a standing army in conjunction with militias in order to successfully fight off an imperialist invasion

I'll leave this question up to other posters. I wouldn't want to derail the thread with my ML tendencies.

It would be defended the same way it would today, with guns.

Each commune gets a nuke? :thumbup1:

Seriously, though, probably through training of militias. It wouldn't be great, and if a powerful nation wanted to, they could probably take over a stateless society, although the benefits of doing something like that are debatable.

There is a difference between nation-states and communes as communes are much smaller.
