At work last night, A worker and I were talking about the company. I had made the comment that stock holders were welfare recipients. Stock holders live off of the hard work of the workers. They do no work to earn their monthly check. The fellow workers responded with "Stock holders take risks" Well let's look into that theory, shall we.

Do stock holders take risks with their lives since they don't work at the businesses that they have investments in? Are stock holders part of the 11.200 that are hurt or made sick from unsafe work place environments? are they part of the over 50,000 that die from occupational work place diseases? and are they one of the 5,840 that are killed on the job from unsafe working conditions?

Do stock holders have to worry about being laid off, outsourcing, moving abroad, buyouts or mergers?. Do stock holders have to worry about working for a company for 25, 30 years, then have the company close or move. Now you are in your late 50,s nobody will hire you, and the years of your life that you gave to that company is gone, with no pension to show for it. And you are too young to collect Social insecurity. Do stock holders have worry about all the above?

The workers response was "they don't have to work there, they have a choice" Well, let's look into that, shall we...The stock holders choose to play the market not out of necessity, they have a choice. The work HAS TO sell his labor power to the highest bidder OUT OF NECESSITY. He either gets exploited or starves, or both, and runs the risk of being killed, or made sick on the job. The workers has no choice. My fellow workers reasponse was "I don't buy it" and walked away.

Years of capitalist propaganda is tough to get over. Especially with the stock market, so many people think that earning money in the stock market doesn't contribute to exploitation.

Most people will trust what that tube has been telling them since they were little over their own family.

Don't worry about it.

The problem of capitalism isn't just exploitation but also instability. I would note that the current unemployment isn't hurting the people who got rich off the housing bubble but the people who had to work hard to get what little they had. And as long as we go on with capitalism, these recessions will be facts of life, and every time it'll get a bit harder and the pay will be driven lower, with the safety net further shredded.

What we are also looking at are a class of permanently unemployed people. People that are viewed as too old to be hired, too experienced to be hired,"overqualified"[meaning they expect a good salery] with downsizing, outsourcing, merging and buyouts, and from all the above, sluggish sales, more layoffs. And even if sales are up,in some cases, they use the economy as an excuse to reduce their work force. it's called "getting lean and mean". it's an opportunity to further reduce overhead and increase profits. this is a permanent downward trend.

Indeed. This "overqualified" thing is just plain bullshit, like what is an out of job experienced person to do if they can't find work? Overqualified is just a crap shoot term thrown around so that exploiters don't have to deal with labour turnover (incase the over qualified person finds a job that they are actually qualifed for), and not pay fair wages.
