Ex-israeli soldier in Facebook scandal would 'gladly kill Arabs'

Emad Hajjaj
BETHLEHEM (Ma'an) -- The ex-soldier criticized for uploading photos of herself on Facebook posing with Palestinian detainees wrote that she would "gladly kill Arabs – even butcher them" the Israeli press said Thursday.

Eden Abergil attracted attention when photographs depicting her smiling in front of blindfolded, handcuffed Palestinians, in an album titled "IDF - Best years of my life" were publicized on a blog, and later in international media.

Writing on her Facebook page on Thursday, Abergil explained, "I hate Arabs and wish them all the worst. I would happily kill them all, even butcher them," the Israeli news site Ynet said.

Responding to a comment made on Abergil’s page, expressing sympathy that the girl’s life has been ruined, Abergil wrote, "No honey, they didn't ruin my life. I can't afford to have Arab-lovers ruin the perfect life I'm leading!!! I am not sorry and I do not regretttttt it."

Fans of Abergil have set up a Facebook support group for the reserve soldier, which has attracted nearly 1,000 fans so far.

The fan page is an apparent response to a group set up by Israeli human rights group Breaking The Silence, which features similar photographs of Israeli soldiers posing next to blindfolded and handcuffed Palestinians. In at least one of the photographs, the Palestinian is dead.

Breaking The Silence set up the group, titled "The norm denied by Avi Benayahu" to demonstrate that, contrary to claims by the Israeli army, Abergil’s album is "merely the tip of the iceberg" and that "Many people possess thousands of photos."

The army condemned Abergil's behavior as "shameless" while the Palestinian Authority said the photos "shows the mentality of the occupier, to be proud of humiliating Palestinians."

In an interview Tuesday with Army Radio, Abergil said "I still don't understand what was wrong."

What a load of emotional nonsense again. Why are we at all surprised that a monstrous system produces monsters? She is but a sympthom of a far wider problem. Any hate directed against her person completely misses the point.

Jeff Halper from ICHAD (http://www.google.com.au/url?sa=t&source=web&cd=1&ved=0CBQQFjAA&url=http%3A%2F%2Fwww.icahd.org%2F&ei=AsRvTPXhNIGyvgOrw5hB&usg=AFQjCNHsQo0tqeg1aIl9Hoc57MAVzDZphA&sig2=15paYBBi1ocqGSZntb5Fjw) made the point that the occupation is having a devastating effect on Israelis. Apparently domestic violence has gone up in Israel.
That's something that so few pro-Israel crazies never consider, that by sending young Israelis into the West Bank and Gaza, to brutalise the population, is leading to external effects on Israeli society. It's no surprise that the Russian party in Israel is so popular, despite being openly racist.

I wouldn't say it was nonsense to feel an emotional reaction when reading this. It is a reminder of the pain and suffering our brothers and sisters in Palestine go through, all in the name of Zionism.

I read this and felt genuine anger, not towards the girl as such, but towards the regime and the thought that there are thousands of soldiers, like her, doing the same thing, all in the name of Zionism.

I wish more properly indoctrinated soldiers would voice their opinions in the mass media, so people could understand the shit going on in the Army. It would be stupid to think of this kind of attitude or treatment as something solely Israeli. It's just that most Armies don't ever get in the position the IDF is in, where they aggressively occupy a territory for years, have to react to violent resistance. It gives them so much opportunity to do shit and let out all their hate, force-fed to them over years and magnified by they typical dehumanization of enemies taught by the military.

All armies are highly sadistic, this would be the tip of the iceberg in pretty much any country.

We need to transfer our anger from this horrible woman to the larger movement as a whole. Because these are widespread abuses, it doesn't do much good to focus on a single cog in the machine. That said, she deserves, as Comrade Lewis said, an RPG in the face.

No shit. Emotional nonsense? Who the heck are you? I find absolutely nothing nonsensical about expressing how extremely repulsive i might find this.
