Well... in about two weeks I'll be going off to college... and since the middle of last year teachers, family, friends and pastors have been wondering the same thing: What am I going to do? Depending on who it is, I usually just give them a very watered down idea in which I just tell them were I'm going to college and what I'm going for and then pretend that I haven't given thought to anything beyond that point. To my close friends and to my youth pastor, prior to him resigning to become normal pastor, I told them about some of my ideas afterward like having kids and maybe living and working in Germany for a few years. However, one of my friends seemed to become dismayed when I told her that I wanted kids in the future. So, I asked her why and what she asked me was, "Why would you want to bring kids into a world like ours that has no chance of offering the things that we had when were little?" When I first heard this, I kinda wondered what she meant. But when I looked upon my childhood and then looked at how society has changed in its attitude of children, I began to see there point. It maybe be selfish to say, or it may have been the self centered attitude felt by many kids, but to me, it seemed like 10~15 years ago, society cared more about the direction and the intellectual growth of children than it does now. Also, it seemed like society gave more attention to children then than they do now. When I looked at this, I began to understand her point about being able to give what children I may have the same things that I had. And when I went further into thought, I concluded that there was really no way that this could change less society would totally regress, which in many ways is not an object.
So overall, I don't know what to think... if this is all in my head or if this is something that actually happened and is still happening. So that leaves me with a few questions, and based upon a recent poll on children, I figure the answers will be interesting :D
So, what importance do children have in society as it is now and if our society became a leftist society, would that importance change?
Are children overvalued or undervalued now and does overvaluing or undervaluing present any risks or problems that could affect society in the long run?
In this society, could a parent from our generation be only able to give to his or her child less of what they had when they were a child, the same amount as when they were a child or more than when they were a child?
And finally, did Marx or any of the other philosophers/idealists make any notable mentions about children in their works?
