Does anyone know how I could purchase North Korean movies? I've been reading a book about the DPRK and it mentions a film called 'The Flower Girl' which apparently won some film festival prize.

try wikipedia: The Flower Girl.
according to North Korea it was written by Great Leader himself. It's plausible but somehow hilarious that they say that.:laugh::laugh:
Try Pulgasari too. Apparently it's The story of the making of that movie would have made an incredible movie itself. Should have bought the rights to that.

of course not, wikipedia is free:D
I meant look it up, obviously. I found this documentary on North Korean cinema in my 10 seconds of googling though. Like I thought, it was actually rather unintentionally comical. and the host obviously knows nothing about socialism or North Korea, but since that wasn't even the point of the video, that's just fine.

Welp, that was completely drenched in Western chauvinism and we're getting further away from the OP's question so let's try to stay on topic.

Wasn't the Flower Girl based on a play written by Kim Il Sung back in the 40s or something ?? Not that strange if you consider that he's so revered just about everything he writes is golden, so its likely that good quality films were made from some of his stories.
I havnt seen it unfortunately :(
And Pulgasari is awesome, one of the best films ever. Its like godzilla but with a historical materialist moral. can be found on google video

The monster seems to be a metaphor for capitalism; he eats metal and gets bigger and bigger and helps the peasants overthrow the feudal order, but then at the end he demands more and more and.. well i wont spoil the ending but yeah it seems like its to be interpreted that way

The book, 'Under The Loving Care Of The Fatherly Leader', credits Kim Jong Il as being the producer of 'The Flower Girl'. I'm not sure who wrote it tho?

Here's a bizarre montage (http://artonline.jp/unsunghero/) (warning: contains 23MB flash file (http://artonline.jp/unsunghero/unsunghero.swf)) of Unsung Heroes (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Unsung_Heroes_%28film%29). I found the woman with the grease-gun so intriguing that I made an avatar of her.
