I was both enraged at and thoroughly embarrassed for the person who wrote this song.

And calling Ground Zero a "sacred place" is really bizarre. Same with the use of the word "hero" for all the people who died. No offense, but other than the firefighters, they were all business people who didn't know what hit them. How is that heroic?

it seems like dumb people like to cheapen words

oh yes, and, despite popular opinion, osama bin laden didnt attack the world trade center for religious reasons at all. he attacked the twin tower because the united states invaded the middle east. shortly after 9/11, when i was in school, one of my classmates said we should bomb them back in the middle east to make them understand how hard it was. if the united states accepted this olan and bombed an afghani skyscraper in response to bin laden suicide bombing the world trade center, it would be equally cruel, but nobody would accept it as so. to sum it up, if this third grader had as much power as bin laden, he would be equally vicious, so what we ought to do is accept that its partially our fault that more vicious islamic leadership resorted to terrorism. if the muslims understand this as well, building a house of worship is their way of accepting it as partially their fault as well, and now it is the usa's turn to take some blame.

Nobody mentioned either how the 9/11 attack was organised by a millionaire. I saw no headlines saying 'Millionaire attacks the US', or that the majority of the attackers were Saudi nationals either.

I posted this on another thread, think it holds relevance here.

http://www.northjersey.com/news/opinions/kelly/95748769_On_this_ground__zero_tolerance.html?page= all

"A Mosque at Ground Zero Spits on the Graves of 9/11," one placard proclaimed. Another sign depicted a toilet, with this message: "This is a Mosque. Do You Want it Built at Ground Zero?"

At one point, a portion of the crowd menacingly surrounded two Egyptian men who were speaking Arabic and were thought to be Muslims.

"Go home," several shouted from the crowd.

"Get out," others shouted.

In fact, the two men – Joseph Nassralla and Karam El Masry — were not Muslims at all. They turned out to be Egyptian Coptic Christians who work for a California-based Christian satellite TV station called "The Way." Both said they had come to protest the mosque.

"I'm a Christian," Nassralla shouted to the crowd, his eyes bulging and beads of sweat rolling down his face.

But it was no use. The protesters had become so angry at what they thought were Muslims that New York City police officers had to rush in and pull Nassralla and El Masry to safety.

"I flew nine hours in an airplane to come here," a frustrated Nassralla said afterward.

And for those of you curious where it's going to be placed,

http://maps.google.com/maps?f=q&source=s_q&hl=en&geocode=&q=51+Park+Place+NYC&sll=37.0625,-95.677068&sspn=55.060677,79.013672&ie=UTF8&hq=&hnear=51+Park+Pl,+New+York,+10007&ll=40.713728,-74.0097&spn=0.005709,0.01929&t=h&z=16&layer=c&cbll=40.713716,-74.01022&panoid=Us4xiwH8CceaIJoQTKt8fg&cbp=11,62.99,,0,-24.28

It's going to occupy the spot of that old Burlington Coat Factory. The wingnuts have tried to backpedal and say that since this building was damaged from falling debris from the Twin Towers it should also be considered part of Ground Zero.

Though of course this has been in planning for awhile; it only became spammed in news networks a few months ago after the New York Post ran one of their ever accurate and fair articles, with Fox and other outlets along for the ride.

Lots of misinformation and flaming fires of hate really. And really I think the media outlets timed it conveniently for the Republicans to rile up their constituency, along with the 14th amendment issue and the immigration bills being debated in other places.

At any rate, it's obvious a lot of people have acted idiotically in approaching this situation.

Of course all this being preached by the same people telling government not to get involved in religious affairs (as long as it isn't theirs, at least) and that they shouldn't be interfering with private property.

Really for me the main thing this has shown me is the hypocrisy of those trying to prevent its construction. Particularly about this nonsense about a zone of exclusion around Ground Zero for mosques.

That is a good point; perhaps the Muslims in NYC feel outraged by the 911 attacks as well, therefore their way of asking forgiveness might be to build a holy shrine nearby the WTC area? Their way of honoring the dead; and their own dead (someone mentioned in another thread that 60 Muslims were murdered in the WTC.)

Despite the whole freedom of religion thing, maybe they should build some public housing/shelter/food bank/other help for the homeless instead. Maybe I'm crazy but I just can't stand it when perfectly good resources go to constructing an empty building for people to do something which they can do at home (pray).

On one hand I can actually understand where these people are coming from. I imagine a synagogue being built next to a place where Isreal had bombs would/has gotten the same reaction. Doesn't mean the people arent reactionary as hell for opposing it, and possibly racist, but I guess I can sort of see why some people would be offended as misguided as they are.

Can we stop pretending the virulent opposition to the mosque is not rooted in less-than-subtle racism, please?

It's not even about hypocrisy or double standards. This is a blatant offensive by the right-wing in the media and the Republican party to unite and rile up their base through tried-and-true xenophobia, Islamophobia, and racialism.

And I LOL'd when I heard the song. Just hilarious lyrics, and at one point I thought the guy said "We gotta give'm a Enima.":lol:

This issue annoys me. It doesn't deserve media attention. As much as I don't like Islam and don't like the idea of Islam expanding in any form it's obvious that the mosque is 100% legal. It's also obvious that the mosque is really a community center that happens to have a mosque in it. It's gonna be like a similar Jewish community center in the borough that acts as an after school hangout place for kids of all religions. Even though 70% or so of Americans oppose the project only about 50% of NYC residents oppose it. The main issue here is capitalism. Since the USA is a capitalist society there should be no controversy regarding what someone is doing with a legally acquired piece of private property. No laws are being broken here.
