BETHLEHEM (Ma'an) -- The Popular Front for the Liberation of Palestine on Monday mourned the death of Abu Obeida Omran, a Palestinian community leader and businessman in the United States.

US police said Abu Obeida Omran, 42, a naturalized citizen who was born in the Burin village in the northern West Bank, was run over after escorting suspected shoplifters out of his store late Friday.

In a statement, the PFLP said Omran's "continuous dedication, warmth, activism and enthusiasm to mobilize his people and defend their national rights and struggle for their liberation is an example to all."

PFLP mourns the loss of community leader Comrade Abu Obeida Omran

The Popular Front for the Liberation of Palestine in occupied Palestine expressed its mourning for Comrade Abu Obeida Omran, a son of Burin and a leader of the Palestinian community in the United States, in a statement on August 14, 2010. Comrade Abu Obeida was murdered in an attempted robbery at his business in Houston, Texas on August 13, 2010.

Abu Obeida was a leader of the Palestinian community, and built numerous Palestinian community activities, institutions and organizations, particularly in the state of Texas, said the PFLP statement. He was a national leader of the right of return movement, built community centers, cultural groups and arts troupes, and was a key organizer of the 2009 Viva Palestina convoy to break the siege of Gaza, said the Front.

The PFLP statement noted that Abu Obeida was a son of the village of Burin who always supported the people of his village and contributed to their steadfastness, whether in Palestine or in the United States. He comes from a family that has given much to the Palestinian people and the Palestinian cause, said the Front, and his continuous dedication, warmth, activism and enthusiasm to mobilize his people and defend their national rights and struggle for their liberation is an example to all.

Abu Obeida played a leading role in supporting Palestinian refugees from Iraq entering the United States, and built strong relationships with solidarity groups and oppressed communities, said the PFLP. He came to the United States after activity in the first Intifada, when he served time as a prisoner of freedom in the jails of the occupier, and never ceased his constant work in support of his people and the cause of liberation, return and self-determination. He supported village projects in Burin and community centers in Houston, organized demonstrations and community cultural events, and always raised the banner of Palestine high.

The PFLP - Palestine pledged to continue in the path of the martyr Comrade Abu Obeida Omran, the son of Burin and the son of Palestine - the path of constant struggle for return to Palestine and liberation of all of Palestine, and to honor his memory by continuing his legacy of community steadfastness, support and solidarity among Palestinians in the occupied homeland and in exile and diaspora.

The statement concluded by calling for glory for the martyr and all of the martyrs of Palestine and its cause.
