like, massive street gangs armed to the teeth by militias, doing the bidding of political parties...I know N. Ireland was like that at one point, but could it ever become to that extent?

I'm just curious so thus I'm asking, because I do not know. however, it seems almost every month someone is killed in sectarian violence.

Northern Ireland was not the same type of conflict.

Things are peaceful and tranquil (sort of) at the moment compared to the height of the Troubles.

Iraq is like this too right now. It's not a good way to make a comparison.
