I've been homeless alot. the most important thing you do is make sure your documents (like your birth certificate soc. card, ID, etc.) are secure, then make sure you get some food stamps before shit gets real hard.

Sorry to hear about that comrades. What sucks most about couch-surfing (I've been there for about 1/2 a year) is the total lack of privacy. The most you can do is try to set up a partition of some kind, but it's also almost impossible to have anyone over. Granted it beats being on the street and being harassed, but that's about all that you can say for it. Well just try to get back on your feet, it's hard to find good work (esp. in Michigan I imagine) whilst in school but if moving in with family isn't an option you might look into going to school part time and see what you can find by ways of something to pay for your bills in the interim.
