I wonder what this lad would say on September the 4th?
I cannot understand why they must put up dates for doomsday prophecies?
Why just not something vague so they could keep their followers?
Should we arrange a bet?

Would be really bitter if the doomsday prophet got it right this time :(

Oh god I live right in the area where the "Big One" is supposed to happen. A couple of years ago they had a warning that there would be a small earthquake in the area that may trigger a catastrophic one, and I freaked out so badly.
But to be more on topic, I don't understand what people get out of making such doomsday prophecies.

Because if they're right, they get the credit of being some great prophet. It's like gambling. Some people go all out and say they found the exact date in some ancient religious writings. And then there are those who are less bold and say vague shit like, ''I will be surprised if we make it through this decade,'' or, ''Jesus will return at any moment.''
It's a testament to the stupidity of religions when the followers of such ''prophets'' continue listening when all of their predictions ultimately fail.

How is that? If they're right about a doomsday prophesy, then the world ends. We're all dead.

There was one back in 2006. Some guy had a dream that there would be an Atlantic Ocean tsunami caused by an asteroid impact on May 25, 2006. He said the dream was a message given to him by aliens. He made a big deal out of it but May 25 passed, and there was no tsunami. He kept moving up the date of the tsunami to later dates. Finally, he said that the aliens had saved us by moving the asteroid away from Earth.

Because most doomsday prophets don't say EVERYONE is going to die. The ''believers'' will go on living in a paradise of some sort and the prophet gets special credit from god.
I've grown up in an apocalyptic family. Not THAT bad, but I have been exposed to quite a bit of this stuff.

These people shouldn't make media attention until the day of their prophecy and the subsequent day proving its falsehood.

I thought we quit doing doomsday prophecies/any prophecies after Nostradamus. Now he had some ballin prophecies, they were obscure as shit, so anything went.
I don't understand the use of specific dates either.

There's an interesting thing that sometimes happens with these groups when the date of destruction passes with disappointingly little destruction. A lot of the followers have strong psychological incentives not to admit that they have dedicated themselves to a group that was completely and utterly wrong and so try to reconcile the cognitive dissonance by claiming it was their own devotion that led to the world being spared. Sometimes these cult leaders are therefore able to keep followers this way.

Sometimes its fame and fortune (Nostradamus was a best selling author in his day) but then not everything is based on the profit motive. An outbreak of millenarianism can often be indicative of increasing discomfort/unease with current society. Its just expressed in a completely wacko fashion

He was nice enough to apologize on his website. :)
Dear Everyone,
First and foremost, I want to apologize for this failed prophecy. I am humbled and downcast. Not because there was no quake or tsunami, but because I feel I've been deceived by many lying signs.
Because these signs were so strong to me, I felt a responsibility to warn others of what I thought was an impending doom coming upon the west coast. I had, back in January 2009, contemplated in prayer that if I say nothing and it happens, it would be worse than saying something and it doesn't happen, so I felt forced into this situation becaue in my mind at the time, I though God does not very often give such strong signs, but, as I thought at the time, he gave them to me as a responsibility to warn others, so I took on this journey and I am now suffering the consequenses of these thoughts and lying signs.
I felt so sure of these signs that I went to the west coast and lived out of my van for 8 months warning people and distributing over 230,000 flyers of this coming trouble. I've also lost 1000s of dollars of my own money spent in this journey.
With others across the nation getting these lying signs, as well as I, it looks like Satan and his demons pulled the wool over our eyes.
I don't believe at all that God has “delayed” this because of some prayers of brethren, due to the many testimonies that came very recently within the last 2 months of this happening. They also were very strong lying signs.
What we can learn from this is that the casting of lots can be very risky and demonic interaction can be made. It wouldn't matter if it was from a deck of cards or tearing up pieces of paper and numbering them. The bottom line is demons can deceive very strongly by this...

It seems the quake was in New Zealand. :)
Rescue crews search for people trapped in New Zealand rubble
Rescue teams were searching for people trapped in the rubble of a major earthquake that caused extensive damage Saturday in Christchurch, New Zealand’s second-largest city.
Basic sanitation was likely to become a major health concern because numerous sewer and water lines were damaged across the city, Civil Defense officials said. About 1,000 residents of two suburbs were put on alert to evacuate their homes as widespread damage to sewer pipes threatened major flooding.
