Although there's a Chit-Chat thread on quitting smoking, I thought this forum should have its own anti-smoking thread.

Up for free discussion are things like gum substitutes to how casual smokers can quit smoking without gum substitutes and such.

Ive found that the healthier the lifestyle I live, the more unhealthy I feel when I smoke, which has helped my quit. Ive spent roughly the last year on a bit of a health trip (running and weights), and snacking on fruit rather than chocolate pie sandwiches, or whatever, and once id broke the back of the exercise ie. once id gone through that barrier between being a fat man coughing his way to that first mile to a reasonably fit man that gets irritable if i dont do at least 3 or 4 miles, then the rest - the healthy eating and the quitting smoking has come more and more easily.

Around February time I started to notice that rather than feel absolutely any benefit from sparking up I simply felt worse within myself for about half an hour. Same with eating unhealthy foods, particularly fast food (McD's etc.).

Im not a fucking monk, though.

Nicotine patches are brilliant I think. Pop one on, go to work, keep busy and in the meantime you're getting all the nicotine you need.

They don't work for everyone though.

I quit flat out a few years ago. Threw half a pack out, haven't touched em since. I guess not everyone can do that, but IMO I think it's all about will power and weither or not you're serious about quitting.

I stopped smoking 2 years ago, literally threw half the cigarette I was smoking down the drain and didn't touch a tab for 18 months, then got drunk and smoked a 10 deck and have smoked every day since. Weird eh?

I didnt smoke, but i used the swedish tobacco snus for a couple of years. When i quited it was hard in the begining but after some weeks i managed to control it, i didnt use any substitutes because i know that it would never help me to get out of the nicotin-swamp, but thats just how it works for me i know that many people finds patches to be helpful, one of them is my uncle.

My grandparents allege that as soon as it was scientifically proven that smoking was harmful to ones health, they both quit smoking cold turkey after smoking most of their lives (they're both in their 90s today). Perhaps the chemical crap they put in cigarettes weren't as bad back then as they are today, thus making it more difficult to quit now--just a theory.

I'm working on quitting right now.

I started rationing my cigarettes every day and so far I'm down to less than a pack a week from a pack every three or four days.

I've tried quitting cold turkey, and the longest I've ever lasted from that is about a week and a half.
