Maoists to hold CC on Wednesday; fierce debate likely

KATHMANDU, Aug 8: Unified Communist Party of Nepal-Maoist (UCPN-M) has decided to hold a Central Committee (CC) meeting from Wednesday to chart out its next strategic move in the new political context and amidst the party´s repeated failure to win the prime ministerial race.
A meeting of the party´s top office bearers on Saturday took a decision to this effect.
Leaders close to party Vice-chairman Dr Baburam Bhattarai had been pressing Chairman Pushpa Kamal Dahal to call a CC meeting to consider alternative courses of action to break the current political deadlock.
“What we want is scrapping the current process of electing a new prime minister as it is leading us nowhere; it has only resulted in humiliation for our party. So a new process should be begun for a consensus government, keeping all options open,” said a senior Maoist leader close to Dr Bhattarai.
He argued that contesting an election for a majority government is not the party´s official decision either. “We contested the election for a majority government only under compulsion. But now, enough is enough,” he said.
But leaders close to Dahal say the current process cannot be annulled until a new prime minister is elected or other parties agree to form a government under Dahal. “The meeting will rather take important decisions on how to move ahead and win the prime ministerial election on August 18,” said Maoist leader Shakti Basnet, who is close to Dahal.
Party leaders say the meeting will see accusations and counter-accusations fly between party leaders close to Dahal and those close to Bhattarai.
Leaders close to Dahal have accused Bhattarai and those close to him of “publicly speaking against party decisions on the PM election” and not helping the party´s prime ministerial candidate, while the latter have alleged that the “party establishment used money to buy votes in the PM election and tarnished the party´s image”.
Bhattarai had told a daily that he was ready to become prime minister at a time when Chairman Dahal had already filed his candidacy for the coveted post.
Meanwhile, the meeting of top office bearers has decided to ask for clarifications from Indian ambassador to Nepal Rakesh Sood about alleged threats from an Indian embassy official to Maoist lawmaker Ram Kumar Sharma.
