View Full Version : Does anyone else feel a little guilty when watching certain shows?

I only ask this because local TV stations around here often air episodes of Jerry Springer and old re-runs of Cops, two shows that I find madly entertaining. And I kinda dislike myself for it.

I feel guilty for watching "the L word"...its literally the worst show on television, yet I still watch it.

I don't know why.

Not guilty, but some shows - particularly comedies that I like (and movies too) will have jokes that piss me off or make me cringe.

Family Guy being the prime example - although the last two years have been kinda shit, so even that I don't watch that much. I guess the Apatow movies also qualify because there is some genuinely funny bits in some of them, but the premises of the plots are almost always sexist - or just exclude women altogether because they don't know how to write for women. Women in these movies are always the killjoy to the male character's man-child - as if the thing that makes men have to kill their inner "fun" and stop hanging out with the bros is a woman and not the social pressures of having to conform and go to work and so on. Same old sexist bullshit in a new package. But, as I said, I think some of the performers and scenes are funny.

I don't watch much reality TV (the competition shows are the fucking worst IMO and I can't bring myself to watch them) and I don't have cable. The only "reality" shows I enjoyed as guilty pleasures were "Jackass" (if that counts as reality tv) and home remodeling shows (It's my porn because I rent but I lust after the idea of a house of my own). Jackass was only not sexist because women apparently did not exist in the universe where that show was taped. John Waters said it was the most homoerotic and S&M show ever on TV and that makes me enjoy the show on a whole other level when I think of it as "Pink Flamingos" for the MTV-watching kids.

The shows that I hate more than Cops or Jerry Springer are the fucking "People's Court" shows on TV during the day. Man I HATE judges and to have a show where fake judges are making moral judgments on a bunch of poor people makes me want to punch the TV.

I take it that you've never seen either Cops or Jerry Springer?

Come back and talk to me about this subject once you've seen some dude try to pay a prostitute with food stamps on Cops. Obviously they don't have exploitative TV in Cyprus...

Jeremy Kyle, dieting shows and general rubbish tv is such a guilty pleasure for me. I feel guilty mostly because it's such a massive waste of time when I could be doing something useful/productive.

I also agree that some tv shows I quite like have jokes in them that make me cringe.

Almost never.

The only thing that I felt kind of "bad" about was two and a half years ago, with the big "revelation" about the Natalee Holloway case, which was uncovered by a sleazy crime journalist on commercial TV. This 2-hour broadcast was one of the most ridiculous TV shows ever, as it was strongly hyped up in the week leading up to it, and of course there were plenty of commercial breaks. Of a population of 16 million, 7 million people watched it, so at least I was in good company.

I'm not sure if it's something to feel "guilty" about, though, as some parts of Joran's secretly-taped "confession" were actually incredibly funny (unintentionally).

This is what I'm talking about (it has a total of 13 parts):

Is Van Der Sloot a celebrity in the Netherlands?
Yeah. Not in the sense he's giving interviews all the time but the vast majority of Dutch people know who he is.
Populair opinion is very negative of him though.

I watched that show Wanted Man mentioned too. It was funny stuff.

Jersey Shore is so bad. The only thing that tops that in terms of how awful it is to watch is Degrassi.

Slice TV? My gf forces me to watch Say Yes to the Dress and Millionaire Matchmaker with her, and sometimes those "Real Housewives of ______" shows. I actually don't mind Say Yes to the Dress but I feel guilty about watching it since it's so pointless.

Biggest guilty pleasure on TV? Deadliest Warrior.

Wanted Man

Is Van Der Sloot a celebrity in the Netherlands?

Since he became a suspect in the Holloway case, obviously. He was already connected to the case in 2005, months after the girl went missing, and years before the broadcast in 2008 with his "confession". In the period in-between, he "wrote" a book about the case.

A few weeks before the broadcast, he appeared on a talk show with his parents and the crime reporter who was investigating him. The entire conversation was civil, despite the reporter repeatedly calling him a liar, but just as the credits rolled, he took his glass of wine and threw it in the reporter's eyes.

The entire thing is considered a bit of a joke, because of the guy's secretly-taped "confession", which is rather funny. He's clearly smoked a bit too much, and he says all sorts of funny shit. The broadcast itself is memorable for being commercial TV at its most bloated and sensationalist variety. "Our" commercial TV crime reporter suddenly appeared on big US news broadcasts and shit like that.

What's also kind of funny is the way he keeps popping up in all sorts of places. After the case, he was connected to human trafficking in Thailand. More recently, he was arrested in Chile for a murder he allegedly committed in Peru. He's always into something. I must say I still find the whole thing amusing.

Yea, I watch that too, partially because so many of the actors are from the high school nearby.

Slice TV is the shit! Real Housewives of New York are the best of the Real Housewives. Sometimes I feel like joining the millionaires club (as a gold digger girl, not a millionaire obviously) to see what the millionaires think of me.

Yeah, they were speculating on certain news shows here whether he's a serial killer who was responsible for the mysterious deaths of other women in Peru/South America.

Homeboy must hate his life now, though...Peruvian prison is no fun. No fun at all. Especially when you've been charged with killing the daughter of a very wealthy, well-connected public figure in the country.
