Yesterday, Reykjavík's Mayor, Jón Gnarr opened the Gay Pride days on it's opening ceremony in the character of an alter-ego transvestite. Jón Gnarr is the leader of the Best Party. A party that won a substantial victory in the resent municipal election - getting the vote of both the apathetic and disillutioned by openly promising to be a super honest and 'sustainably transparent' money-whore party with a clown-platform.

I never really understood the concept of gay pride parades, to be honest--gay/lesbian friends I have say that they set the community back years, and that they tend to be male bourgeoisie dominated--considering I grew up in San Francisco and have seen one almost every June, I'll take their word for it, as there would always be controversy ensuing when lesbians and transgenders would be underrepresented, and then there would always be accusations of racism.
LGBT pride parades are a good distraction, yes, but they don't actually do anything to advance the rights of homosexuals.
tl;dr: Gay pride parades are dominated by bourgeois wealthy white men and do little to advance the rights of LGBT people.

Are they really ready to give free bus ride to student and cripples?

How wonderful that the Best Party won :D
Only a shame that its going to be a one shot like similar parties (Jesse Ventura, Wycleff Jean).
This is like if the Raving Monster Party would get the mayor post of London. :D
To help the households in the country: Family is the best thing in society. Governments need to meet the needs and demands of households. An ironclad shield wall needs to be raised around the households in this country. Icelandic households deserve only the best.
To improve the quality of life of the Less Fortunate: We want the best of everything for this bunch and therefore offer free access to buses and swimming pools so you can travel around Reykjavik and be clean even if you're poor or there's something wrong with you.
Stop corruption: We promise to stop corruption. We'll accomplish this by participating in it openly.
Equality: Everyone deserves the best regardless of who they are and where they come from. We will do our best for everyone so that everyone can be together on the best team.
Increase transparency: It's best to have everything aboveboard so that the general public knows what is going on. We say we support that.
Effective democracy: Democracy is pretty good, but an effective democracy is best. That's why we want it.
Cancel all debts: We listen to the nation and do as it wishes because the nation knows what's best for itself.
Free bus rides for students and cripples: We can offer more free things than any other party because we aren't going to follow through with it. We could say whatever we want. For example, free flights for women or free cars for people who live in rural areas. It's all the same.
Free dental services for children and cripples: This is something that is lacking, and we definitely want to take part in promising it.
Free access to swimming pools for everyone and free towels: This is something that everyone should fall for, and it's the election promise we're most proud of.
Take those responsible for the economic collapse to court: Felt we had to include this.
Complete equality of the sexes
Listen more to women and old people: This bunch gets listened too far too little. It's as if everyone thinks they are just complaining or something. We're going to change that.

Yup, and I'm sure there were lack people who thought that the civi rights movement set back Black people too.
The parades are a liberating experience for the participants. And, they are fun.
Up with fun!:thumbup1:

To compare a bourgeois gay pride parade with the struggle for rights of blacks or LGBT people is kind've grossly exaggerated.

I dunno. I wonder how this became a gay pride thread when the subject is that a party of clowns have won an election in island.
As for gay pride marches, I haven't paid so much attention to such events.

This might even suggest that socialist could come a long way electorily by being flippant and humorous - in stead of being grave, dead serious and meticulous. Since it would calvinize apathetics which are by far the biggest prolitarian constituency.

And we'd have a socialist elected by a -still- apathetic working class that just thought he was funny.
How is that going to lead to anything?

Black people during the Civil rights movement or feminists back in the day went out and said "We're people, we 're just as good as anyone, we want equal rights".
Most of the gay pride parades seem like an overstatement of all the conservative misconceptions one might have, simply to prove they won't arrange their llives according to them.
Its equivalent would be to have black people march holding bananas being "proud of their blackness".
If gay people face discrimination and lack some important rights, then they don't need "fun" parades, they need the discrimination to stop and their rights to be recognized. These acts are only good for their sponsors -and there are many- who find an excellent opportunity to appeal to a commercially important demographic.

Raising the profile and publicity of socialism and communism. Making it more likely to be the talk of the town - promting contention and inducing more people to read into the literature. Essentially it would be like putting ones foot in the door. Plus it's fun and light hearted. Two flyes in one stroke.

yea, its tragic that a group of gay and lesbian wanted to have some fun rather than being serious about everything.
