I've been donating to and volunteering at a food-bank and thinking of what else I can do to help. What do you do to support your community?

I've pretty much only planted trees, done clean up efforts, and raised awareness on environmental issues. Also I don't beat people to a pulp, I reckon that helps.

Food drives and helping at the local food bank, and other odd "drives," like tree-plantings or cleaning up buildings around town.

How extended from one's home is the "community?" Because around where I live, there's not much to do except help kids at summer camp or do gardening. But if I go 30-45 mins (by bus) away, I get into the Downtown Eastside where all sorts of terrible poverty is happening and lots of social work is done. Haven't really done any of that though... but I should seeing as how I'm a sociology student.

By community I generally meant how you help people in general around you , it could be locally or distant. It does'nt matter.

I go with a local catholic charity (as they're the ones I am most comfortable with, as they don't preach or attempt to convert) who feed the homeless, and allow them to sleep in church property while helping them get GEDs and jobs etc.

I don't know, but I notice Catholic charities are usually more reliable than any other christian charity in my opinion, because they really don't deny help to anyone, nor will they attempt to "save you" while you're starving, or needing help. They don't see you as a "soul to be saved", but rather, as a human being who needs material and mental saving first and foremost.

I was homeless for a while, and bless/long life to Father Dura at St Patrick's San Francisco. really, that man has advocated for me when no one else would.

Ask them, not us. That'd be the first thing to try really :P

Other than that there's lots of things you can do to make the place tidier, safer, etc. A few ideas we've had are litter picking, clearing snow, and I also had an idea to do a different take on youth clubs, which is on my blog. Most of the stuff we go for is revolved more around getting communities to help each other rather than reinforcing the idea that you can sit on your butt and somebody else will fix it. Very important that
