I wanted to consider an issue that I sometimes run into. It involves insensitivity and whatnot. I want to start straight off by saying that if anybody at my work is insensitivity conscious it's me. First off, I am Latino, and I live in the South, So I've dealt with my fair share of "awkward" situations, if you catch my drift.
However, I sometimes think about things that could hurt my ability to find a decent job. Sometimes it involves leftist activities, that do not look good when your potential employers might find out about it. But sometimes, it is threats from the left itself.
For example, I recently was discussing one of Lady GaGa's songs at work with a co-worker, and I made a reference to Kanye West's "Poke Her Face" which is a totally sexist, misogynist and heteronormative song (I'd imagine, actually I've never heard it). Clearly this is not workplace talk.
But another time, I was talking to a Lesbian co-worker, and awkwardly said some ignorant things, I think. I'm just socially awkward, but I think it's also that I'm a little bit ignorant too, not so much on theory but in actual lived experiences of disadvantaged people...
