Having worked retail for a long time back in the day I understand a couple things about this situation.
The 'evidence' of Omar Thornton stealing beer may not have existed outside of an incident involving him acting in a manner that wasn't in conjunction with company policy. Ex: him being around an open door at a certain time. This would be used to fire individuals for a variety of reasons.
The hiring of minorities is a ploy to not get bad press- I don't think the companies 'care' either way who works there. A U.S. company wouldn't get very far hiring a white only work force.
The people that worked at the company but were not affected by racism- or were not a target of racism- are not an example of a 'lack of racism in the work place'.
I tend to think that those people who commit murder at the work place perhaps care more about the world around them than the average person.
