NC to bow out in fifth round
Himalayan News Service
KATHMANDU: Nepali Congress today said it would contest Fridays runoff, but bow out in the fifth round if the parliament were to fail yet again to elect a new prime minister on August 6.
The decision came at the end of a meeting of the partys officer bearers, held at the private residence of Acting President Sushil Koirala today.
The Congress pullout will leave the Maoist chairman alone in the race for prime ministership, but Pushpa Kamal Dahal will still have to secure 300 votes to be elected in the 599-member House. The Maoist supremo, who controls 237 votes of his own party, garnered 22 more from other parties, taking his tally to 259 in yesterdays polls. He will need 41 more votes to get elected the prime minister.
Congress prime ministerial candidate has consistently secured 124 votes, with CPN-UML and United Madhesi Democratic Front staying neutral, effectively abstaining from the parliamentary vote.
The Congress position is partially linked with the third round of polls held yesterday too failing to pick a new executive head though 11 Madhesi
lawmakers crossed the floor, casting ballots in favour of Dahal.
The NC had assessed the prime ministerial election and concluded that the majority-oriented system and the three unsuccessful attempts to elect Madhav Kumar Nepals successor had only sent a wrong signal to the general public.
NC spokesperson Arjun Narsingh KC told mediapersons that the NC wanted to break the deadlock and move ahead in a new way. The party is open to alternatives, KC said. But that needs to be discussed within the party.
