View Full Version : I'm dating an Asian and have black friends: can I make jokes about their ethnicities?

Just wondering if that's official board policy now, since a precedent has been set by "someone".
Is it only a bannable offense if I have no black friends anymore or stop dating my girlfriend? or is it only acceptable if no one of the mentioned ethnicity is present to be offended?

Personally, I think you can joke about everything and anything. I just can't stand all that pretentious "you cant talk about that stuff!" idiocy. All you have to make sure of is that people know you are joking.

Doesn't matter how often it's used. What matters is if it's used accurately.
Like I said, comrade, sounds like you're trolling, or baiting, chumming the waters, or whatever words we want to use.

In my opinion, no. Should we really be legitimizing racism (and sexism, homophobia etc. for that matter) by making such jokes, let alone excusing them on the grounds that one has friends who are non-white?

No. we really shouldn't be.

This thread made me think of that blackpeopleloveus.com site haha. But no, that doesn't sound good, almost as bad the whole "I'm not racist, BUT" thing where somebody inevitably turns out to be racist by the end of their sentence.

Personally, I'm of the opinion that nobody has the right to never be offended by something they may hear. But it's a matter of context. I don't think that while we speak as representatives of the left, jokes like these are acceptable.

What a stupid retarded question.
Though it is true that among Asians and Blacks ourselves, we sometimes use "racist" words without the word meaning anything like an insult. For instance, did you know there was a mainland Chinese leftist author called Wang Lixiong who wrote a novel literally called "Yellow Peril" (Huang-huo in Chinese). "Yellow Peril" is a racist phrase like "nigger" but in the Chinese context it is ok if Chinese people themselves use it.
However, the English translation of this novel avoided the term "Yellow Peril" and used "China Tidal Wave" instead.
