Mine explosion kills 15 in China
Sat, 31 Jul 2010
China has once again felt the effects of its poor coal mining safety measures in the wake of an explosion, which killed at least 15 people in a northern mine.
The explosion occurred at a coal mine near the town of Linfen in the northern province of Shanxi on Saturday.
Local authorities launched rescue operations to try to reach any workers who might be trapped inside the mine.
At least 20 people were also injured in the explosion, Xinhua news agency said.
The cause of the blast is under investigation.
China’s vast coal mining industry is notoriously accident-prone due to a lack of regulation and inefficiency as mines rush to meet soaring demands.
Official figures show that at least 2,631 miners lost their lives in the same type of accident in Chinese mines last year.
China relies on coal-generated power for about 70 percent of its electricity needs.
