To be fair, I really couldn't speak too much about the Greek scene because I really don't know too much about it. But the most common differentiations between rap and hip hop in the US are electronically generated music in rap vs live instrumentation (which isn't always the case but is far more common) in hip hop, R&B hooks in rap vs a simple recitation of a prominent phrase and/or a scratch break in hip hop... Hip hop in general tends to be more socially conscious whereas rap is (to me) designed intentionally with commercial success in mind. From what I can tell, rap is a lot more club friendly as well because it's more danceable, so there's that. There's also this sort of je ne sais qois intangible difference in the way the vocals are delivered. It's hard to define without simply just pointing to examples. Anyway, I do like some rap, Busta Rhymes, Missy Elliot, Trick Daddy, Dizzee Rascal, for instance, I just can't stand fuckin' Eminem, lulz...
