I'm trying to compile a practically sized bibliography of general studies of the history of socialism and would greatly appreciate title recommendations. In addition, if you know what works were considered definitive for the layman at various points in time that would be extremely helpful to me as well. I want to get a sense of the development of the narrative of socialism, as told by its friends, enemies and reasonably non-partisan observers. Thanks in advance.

Chris Harman's A People's History of the World is good.

The old standard history is G.D.H. Cole's A History of Socialist Thought in 5 volumes starting with the precursors in the 18th century down to the outbreak of WWII in 1939.

Three titles that come to mind are the magisterial Main Currents of Marxism by Leszek Kołakowski and two regional histories: Forging Democracy: The History of the Left in Europe, 1850-2000 by Geoff Eley and Utopia Unarmed: The Latin American Left After the Cold War by Jorge G. Castaņeda. I also recommend the reference work Encyclopedia of the American Left, second edition.

This guy established A utopian colony featuring sexual liberation, in the 19th Century. His book is interesting.

The Geoff Eley book looks as if it focuses on Labourism in Western Europe and the Soviet Union in Eastern Europe.
