Family and friends of Chanel Larkin, 26, will be joined by community supporters at an evidentiary hearing concerning her accused killer, Andrew Olaciregui, to be held on Wednesday, July 28, at 1:30 p.m. in the courtroom of Judge Kevin Martins at the Milwaukee Safety Building ( 821 West State Street ), Room 502.
Wearing t-shirts bearing pictures of Chanel, the attendees hope to impress upon the accused and everyone else in the courtroom that Chanel was a much-loved community member who is greatly missed by many. The court watchers also hope to educate members of the media, which was largely incorrect and offensive in its original coverage of Chanels May 7th murder, erroneously referring to her as man in a dress or a cross-dresser. The medias refusal to understand and honor transgender peoples identity helps create an environment in which people like Andrew Olaciregui feel justified in harming or even killing a transgender person, said Michael Munson, Executive Director of FORGE, Wisconsin s largest transgender and SOFFA (Significant Others, Friends, Family and Allies) organization. As the stories and pictures of Chanel demonstrate, gender identity has absolutely nothing to do with how worthy or loved a person is.
The court watch has grown out of a series of community meetings organized by FORGE; SHEBA (Sisters Helping Each Other Battle AIDS), a program of Diverse & Resilient; and the Milwaukee LGBT Community Center s Anti-Violence Project. The purpose of these meetings has been to support community members in our grief and then to transform our loss into positive changes in our shared and respective communities. The next community meeting has been scheduled for 2:00 p.m. on Sunday, August 8, at the Milwaukee LGBT Community Center , 315 W. Court Street, Milwaukee , Wisconsin .
