Israeli helicopter crashes in Romania
Published yesterday (updated) 27/07/2010 13:56
Bethlehem - Ma'an - An Israeli military helicopter crashed Monday in Romania killing all seven soldiers on board, officials said.
Palestinian officials in Bucharest told Ma'an that six Israelis and and a Romanian airman who were participating in a joint military exercise were killed in the crash.
Israel's military confirmed the crash late Monday. Seven personnel were said to be missing including four pilots, two airborne mechanics, and a member of the Romanian air force, the army said.
The army said in a statement that extensive searches were underway. The air force was preparing to send medical teams and a rescue party, the statement added. The Romanian and Israeli air forces have agreed to investigate the incident jointly, the military said.
Israeli army officials say the training program in Romania was similar to others elsewhere and designed to mimic certain theaters and terrains such as those the Israeli military could encounter in a future conflict.
The Israeli media were prevented by gag order from reporting the news until late Monday.
The missing were identified as: Lieutenant General Avner Goldman, 48, Lieutenant Colonial Daniel Shipenbauer, 43, Major Yahel Keshet, 33, Major Lior Shai, 28, Lieutenant Nir Lakrif, 25, and Sergeant 1st Class Oren Cohen, 24.
