where to start.....

1. no major objectives, they were told to take the port, but for what reason?
2. the planning staff were incompetent
3. terrible terrible terrain
4. no heavy support
5. only cruisers and destoryers provided landing support
6. the stones of the beach prevented tank movement
7. the Canadians were not supported by British forces
8. high german morale and rapid counter attacking

It was a complete bulls up wasn't it?

Although people do justify the deaths of the 5000+ Canadians at Dieppe by saying it showed the Allies they could not take large ports, and they had to attack beaches, not ports. It also contributed a lot to the layout of the enemy and the amount of forces it would use etc.

But it was one of the Western Allies' greatest fails.

I've heard that the Germans knew the raid was coming, which obviously would have contributed to its failure.

yeah it did prod the germany defenses, but many would argue that the whole thing could have been done in a different place and done with less causalities. the whole operation had no real goal, a learning exercise with a very deadly consequence for the canadians, brits, and americans there (50 rangers, one of the first US actions in europe). it could have been avoided, and many officers at the time knew that. that's why it was such a shit show.
