Skim/low-fat milk linked to prostate cancer. Whole milk decreases risk. (http://www.reuters.com/article/idUSHAR26781420080102)
It's funny, people think you are weird if you drink whole milk. This obsession with removing the fat from dairy....might not be so healthy after all. And of course it's meaningless for weight loss, dietary fat doesn't make you fat, calories do....duh...
I wonder why whole milk hasn't caught on as much as olive oil, now some people just LOVE olive oil. Especially if it's extra-virgin....which has to be the funniest label for a food item I have ever heard of.
In the end, low-fat is bullshit, low-carb is bullshit...and diet gurus want fame and money.

It depends on what kind of problems the individual has. People with abnormal levels of cholesterol (LDL too high and HDL too low) are in danger of having heart attacks and strokes. Being too large to fit into their pants is not their major problem. Fatty foods are dangerous for their circulatory system.

We don't need milk! We are the only mammals that continue drinking milk after our nursing stages. Oh! and cats! only because we feed it to them.
people forget that Milk is a BIG BUSINESS! of course they want us to drink that garbage. (mustache anyone?)

Yeah and they always exaggerate the whole Milk=calcium thing...the truth is humans can have healthy bones and teeth without ever drinking milk at all. There are other sources of calcium like green leafy vegetables....
Vitamin D (which humans get from sunlight exposure) is WAY more important than calcium because if you get enough Vitamin D that helps reduce the excretion of the calcium in urine...it is all about balance of calcium levels. They are finding that people are getting osteoporosis not because of calcium deficiency but because of Vitamin D deficiency.

That's just nonsense. Humans have been drinking milk far longer than big business existed. Milk products have been consumed for as long as 10,000 years (http://www.world-foodhistory.com/2008/06/history-of-milk.html), while it was only about 6,000 years ago (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Lactose_intolerance#History_of_genetic_prevalence) when humans developed the ability to digest lactose through their entire lifetime. This ability was a huge advantage for these early humans which is why the mutation spread all around Europe. You might as well say that lactose tolerant people are genetically made to drink milk.

I don't have stats for people who are lactose intolerant but the percentage is HIGH among blacks, asians and native americans. Like you mention people of European decent have been drinking it far longer than others so they've develop a tolerance for it. Just because we culturally and traditionally are accustomed to drink milk does not mean we are supposed to keep on doing it. Science now proves that we don't need it at all. NOW it's a big business, haven't you seen all the mustache adds with your favorite athletes and celebrities?
Over the years some humans have develop some sort of tolerance for diary but our bodies don't need it. I always point to other mammals to show people Milk does not equal strength and growth. My favorite example is the Gorilla 99.5% DNA similar to us and they don't drink milk (after nursing) and look how strong they are.
Now if you love milk and don't wanna give it up that's fine... who gives a shit lol. Just saying that it's not as essential as they made you believe it is.

Shoes. Nike makes billions every year from manufacturing all sorts of runners (haven't you seen the ads!?!) yet our ancestors got by just fine with rough sandals. Clearly we do not need shoes so don't let Them convince you otherwise
Just saying that it's not as essential as they made you believe it is. Who has claimed that it is? Who here believes that milk is an absolutely vital component of the human diet? Who has been brainwashed by corporate advertising into being unable to imagine a world without milk?

Neither does consuming milk, in itself.
Doesn't mean we should necessarily stop either.
Science now proves that we don't need it at all.
That's not the same as proving that we shouldn't drink it in the first place - science only says that if you don't want to or can't drink milk, alternatives are available. Science cannot tell us to consume milk or not, because it isn't in the business of making value judgements.
NOW it's a big business, haven't you seen all the mustache adds with your favorite athletes and celebrities?

Gorillas don't have agriculture or civilisation, and only have rudimentary toolmaking abilities as far as I'm aware. That sort of evolutionary path tends to favour brawn over brains. I don't think it's a valid comparison to make.
Now if you love milk and don't wanna give it up that's fine... who gives a shit lol. Just saying that it's not as essential as they made you believe it is.
I think the best approach if one is concerned with one's diet is to ignore both the corporate lobbies and the animal rights loonies and make one's own mind up using the actual scientific evidence available.

i heard that animal fats can contribute to causing prostate cancer in susceptable men. so for them less fat milk is better.
but for most people i think "normal" milk is probably better if part of a balanced diet. which means not to much other fat.

They sure do spend a lot of money on marketing to make you believe YOU NEED IT! don't you think?Who does? I've seen ads showing me people having a good time while drinking milk, I've seen ads telling me that its a good source of calcium, but I've never encountered anyone or any ad that insisted that I "NEED IT". We're not talking about water here. So who exactly are 'they' that are telling you that you'll die without milk? Do you think this is some sort of insidious plot?
As for the wider issue of advertising, so people spend money selling products. I for one am shocked and appalled () that such a practice could be tolerated in a capitalist society. Can't see what the problem is there myself but the very idea...
(Here's one for you - there's a huge 'food industry' that does nothing but produce and sell food products to the gullible masses. Think about that the next time you're hungry)
Business practices aside- wearing a pair of shoes doesn't kill you. Are you suggesting that there are lactose intolerant people somewhere being forced to drink milk by insidious advertising campaigns?
There are people out there allergic to nuts. Should we stop producing and selling nuts (something that our bodies definitely doesn't need)? If eating a particular foodstuff makes you ill then don't eat that again. Complaining that it is being sold (despite being completely harmless to the vast majority of the rest of the population) is ridiculous

Melvin B. Heyman: Lactose Intolerance in Infants, Children, and Adolescents (September 2006)
http://pediatrics.aappublications.org/cgi/content/full/118/3/1279
Approximately 70% of the world’s population has primary lactase deficiency.[7,8] The percentage varies according to ethnicity and is related to the use of dairy products in the diet, resulting in genetic selection of individuals with the ability to digest lactose (Table 1). In populations with a predominance of dairy foods in the diet, particularly northern European people, as few as 2% of the population has primary lactase deficiency. In contrast, the prevalence of primary lactase deficiency is 50% to 80% in Hispanic people, 60% to 80% in black and Ashkenazi Jewish people, and almost 100% in Asian and American Indian people.[9–11] The age of onset and its prevalence differ among various populations. Approximately 20% of Hispanic, Asian, and black children younger than 5 years of age have evidence of lactase deficiency and lactose malabsorption,[12] whereas white children typically do not develop symptoms of lactose intolerance until after 4 or 5 years of age. Recent molecular studies of lactase-phlorizin hydrolase (lactase) have correlated the genetic polymorphism of messenger RNA expression with persistence of lactase activity, demonstrating early loss (at 1–2 years of age) of messenger RNA expression and enzyme activity in Thai children and late (10–20 years of age) loss of activity in Finnish children.[11,13]Milk: Another scheme by whitey to terrorize the world.

I used to be fickle about soy milk...but over time I got to the point that I love to drink soy milk, particularly vanilla, at any opportunity when there's some in the fridge and yet rarely drink normal milk.
