Hi,

I've been a long-term socialist, and I'm really interesting in finally joining a revolutionary or multi-tendency socialist organization in my area. I go to school in Iowa, 30 minutes north from Iowa City. Does anyone know of active organizations in this area? I did some research and there seems to be a branch of the Socialist Party used to be active here some time ago, however I cannot find evidence of them currently. I have seen some left-wing activists in the streets of Iowa City before, so I think someone must be active there.

I'm most interested in Democratic Socialist organizations, however I'm not picky and participate in other tenancies - as long as it is not some crazy Maoist or Stalinist group.

Hi there,

There are Socialist Action members in Cedar Rapids who are looking to build a branch. I should know - I'm one of them. ; )

We put together a local site, www.hawkeyeworker.wordpress.com , that has more details & our contact info.

Oh, that's cool. You can probably guess what school I go to. I return at the end of August, so maybe I'll check you guys out. I did some flood relief work this year, so I know Cedar Rapids got pretty hard hit by that.

I'm interested if there any other left wing organizations in the area, though.

The Socialist Workers' Party has something going on in Des Moines. The ISO has a member in Iowa City. There's also an antiwar coalition in Cedar Rapids called Women for Peace that our group works with, an an informal group of anti-war individuals who hang in Iowa City. (these are most likely the people you saw.)

There's a social anarchist group, Wild Rose Collective, in Iowa City.
