It's very demanding. Marcuse draws on the Heglian strain in Marx for his analysis. Of Marcuse's other works I liked the briefer Revolution and Revolt and An Essay on Liberation. Eros and Civilization is the key to One Dimensional Man.

If you are interested in the development of the New Left and the Frankfurt School it's essential reading. But also read Paul Mattick's Critique of Marcuse (http://libcom.org/library/critique-of-marcuse-and-one-dimensional-man-in-class-society-mattick).

Don't listen to the vulgar reactions the book drew for being "elitist"; there's nothing more controversial there than in Lukacs or even Lenin. Also, it's been brought to my attention that the seventh chapter (on Wittgenstein) should be skipped. I lost my copy, so I never finished the book. I enjoyed what I read though. His use of Rousseau for the purpose of revolution is convincing. Be sure to also check out Debord's Society of Spectacle.
