Announcing the results, Nembang said that 140 votes were cast against him. However, 236 lawmakers preferred staying neutral.
KATHMANDU: The House on Wednesday evening rejected UCPN-Maoist chairman Pushpa Kamal Dahal's name for the new prime minister.
When Speaker Subas Nembang asked the House to cast vote in favour or against the UCPN-Maoist candidate, the latter could garner only 242 votes.
The attendance of House showed that 592 lawmakers took part in the election process when the proposal to elect the former prime minister to succeed to his successor Madhav Kumar Nepal who resigned from the prime minister's post on June 30.
Announcing the results, Nembang said that 140 votes were cast against him. However, 236 lawmakers preferred staying neutral.
As the proposal to elect Dahal could not garner the majority votes, the Speaker announced that it was rejected as per the constitutional provisions.
Earlier, after the completion of the discussion, Nembang asked if the Maoists wanted to withdraw their party's proposal. However, Dr. Baburam Bhattarai, who proposed Dahal as the candidate for the post, said his party would uphold the proposal citing that the Maoists being the single largest party in the COnstituent Assembly should get to lead the new governemnt.
Then Speaker Nembang decided to carry out the voting for Dahal's candidacy.
As the Maoist candidate failed to garner a simple majority, the name of Nepali Congress candidate Ram Chandra Paudel has been put to vote.
The former rebel leader became the country's 32nd prime minister after posting his party--the then CPN-Maoist--as the single largest party in the Constituent Assembly polls.
He, however, stepped down from the goverment last year following the controversies over the sacking and the subsequent reinstatement of the then army chief, Rookmangud Katawal.
The Maoists, unexpectedly, decided to field Dahal as the party's candidate in the prime minsiter's election at the eleventh hour yesterday, by killing the party's vice chairman and former Finance Minister Dr. Baburam Bhattarai's chances to become the country's 34th prime minister.
