Interesting topic I with had a friend (yep, I have at least 1, LOL) yesterday, as to how many real friends does a regular person have. Her idea is that the number keeps shrinking because of the opportunism and how many good friends will fuck you up eventually.
So what would you say, how many real friends do you have (not casual acquaintances) that you can count on and consider such?
For me, I'd say 4-5.

I think for me, maybe 2-3. Lots of my friends (or "friends") are pretty selfish, being libertarians and all.

I have 2 or 3 real friends. I have a lot of acquaintances that some would call their friends, but I know that they'd stab me in the back given half the chance.
I've never brought into all this "I have loads of friends" bullshit. Its infantile.

ScienceDaily (June 23, 2006) — Americans' circle of close confidants has shrunk dramatically in the past two decades and the number of people who say they have no one with whom to discuss important matters has more than doubled, according to a new study by sociologists at Duke University and the University of Arizona.- http://www.sciencedaily.com/releases/2006/06/060623093533.htm
A recent study by sociologists at Duke and the University of Arizona found that, on average, most adults only have two people they can talk to about the most important subjects in their lives — serious health problems, for example, or issues like who will care for their children should they die. And about one-quarter have no close confidants at all. - http://www.nytimes.com/2006/07/02/weekinreview/02fountain.html?_r=1&n=Top%2FReference%2FTimes%20Topics%2FPeople%2FF%2F Fountain%2C%20Henry

which is undoutbable linked to anxeity and other mental health issues, which has risen greatly the last few decades, it's clearly corrolated with growing inequality, as are almost all problems.
I don't think I have any "super" close friends, one I could say anything to. I probably have 3 or so casual friends.

Wow. I guess I'm a minority? I have two distinct close groups of friends, consisting of about ten people in each (two different states). I know a lot more people, but I'm not as close to them as my core group of friends at all.
Also, your friends are more popular than you.

Meh I really only have one friend where I live. I come from one of those backwards tourist towns along the Gulf Coast of Florida, so many of the truly close friends who had a lick of sense got out a long time ago. I was one of the last to get out, but so far I've had a bit of trouble making friends where I now live. I chalk it up to capitalism as well, since the current economic downturn is what I blame for my current unemployment and I've historically made friends either through work or school.
However, I can name at least five people who would lay down in traffic for me if they thought it would help me. Trouble is they're now scattered to the four winds for the reasons I mentioned above.

I believe in this theory too.
It's not as if majority of people simply became anti-social over night, but circumstances changed dramatically.
After school people would usually befriend with people from work, this nowadays tends to become difficult especially if you work in a corporate or office atmoshpere, simply because of the "Homo homini lupus" attitude that is so prevalent.
Second, if you have a hard time making a living (as many of us do), you don't have much time to spend on your friends (and vice versa).
I believe an equation could easily be constructed that correlates two elements: life gets tougher and thus your close circle becomes smaller, eventually leaving only you against the world.
The quoted study results do not surprise me at least.

I have about 8-9 friends, but I'm not sure I would ever talk about anything extremely serious or personal with any of them. Maybe just one of them since she moved to California and it doesn't really matter what she knows.

I maybe have... 1 very close friend, but she's my partner, so I dunno if that counts. I used to have a few close friends, but I've moved a few hundred miles since I last saw them. They refuse to go on social networking sites and rarely use IM... one of them doesn't even have access to a fucking computer.
Not that it matters, I'm an anti-social dickhead anyway. :thumbup1:

Around fifteen to twenty close friends and like..... twenty five or thirty acquaintances, something like that. Went greek in college and became a social butterfly. I probably only had about two people I would really consider friends throughout high school

3-5 though I am only really in contact with 3 of them right now. But what I consider a 'friend' is basically a really fucking close friend. I have loads of 'buddies' but I trust them as bout as far as I can trow them, on important matters. And I am not very strong.

What's a friend then? I know quite a few people (3-5) that will stand their round and all that stuff but absolutely no one with whom I will discuss my "deep" feelings or whatever.

This is kind of silly and arbitrary, but... maybe have a dozen, a dozen really close friends who I know pretty well, although a lot of them I don't get to see much. I also have a lot of friends who I don't know as well but who are great people and who have helped me out a lot with different things. I have some pretty great acquaintances.

I have 4-6. friends, 2 is close, but don't not trust me as much, when we first became friends because of my big mouth. I can be myself around a couple of them, my net friends don't count, i need local people.

Depends what you call a 'friend'. The group I hang with outside of uni is a dozen.
Uni is different, I kind of have a couple groups of friends going on. Not sure you'd call them that though. It's more convenience, I dont seem them/want to see them outside of school.
I have 2-3 people I would trust my life with.
Of course there are also comrades, but I don't spent much social time with them in normal circumstances.
Nic.
I have about 3 very close friends - and something like 7 others.

2 really close friends of mine I can trust my life with, plus a girlfriend I can depend on even more so. Don't see my friends much at all anymore, so I'm left surrounded by acquaintances.

0-5 roughly
1-2 are in my area and the rest are elsewhere. So I tend to not have strong friends with me much except with maybe one person who's my roommate.
Acquaintances are however more numerous.
