View Full Version : What's the "left wing" news website equivalent to BBC.com or CNN.com?

I know we have wikileaks, democracynow, the real news and even the nation. Is there a website on line that's very progressive and tends to report about all main stream media with a left wing/progressive view?

I'm not looking for a labor or union focus website. I know plenty of sites that just focus on labor movements. I would like to general news around the world.

Thank you!

You won't find one unified website that pertains to every far leftist movement, but there are a few good ones.

http://world.internationalism.org/

That's the one I'll throw in there. It's pretty good, from the Left Communist tradition.

The closest thing to a leftwing newsservice is the world socialist website, wsws.org, which is being maintained by the international committee for the fourth international, one of two Trotskyist organisations that carry that name.

An alternative would be indymedia, which has a website in many countries.

WSWS.org covers more broadly than any other left website, with perhaps only SocialistWorker.org or MorningStarOnline.co.uk coming close.

http://left-news.com/ is pretty useful.
http://www.ww4report.com/ more specific but very good for what it is. Bill Weinberg is involved with it.

I haven't come across a site that particularly effectively caters for everything though. wsws is fairly good for this I suppose, if you don't mind the Trotskyism.

You could try L5I or also known as the league for the fifth international

Al Jazeera's p. good. Definitely not left wing, but certainly one of the most even handed out there.

The Guardian has sort of a left-wing slant.

And then there's www.exiledonline.com

and that one is just

just great

I don't think any of these links are really what he's asking for, is it? All those left-wing news sites are interesting, but they certainly aren't equivalent to BBC or CNN. WSWS or the ICC may or may not have good articles on the subjects that they concern with, but there's no way in hell that you know all the relevant "today's news" when you've read them.

To be honest, I don't think there's any left-wing website that is equivalent to BBC or CNN, never mind a "revolutionary" site. However, some alternative media that are good to check:

1) Activist websites. This includes the worldwide Independent Media Center (http://www.indymedia.org/en/index.shtml), but also a site like Solidnet (www.solidnet.org) for news of many communist parties in the world.

2) News agencies of all the bad countries that your mother warned you about. There's Xinhua (http://www.chinaview.cn/), Prensa Latina (http://www.plenglish.com/), Vietnam News Agency (http://news.vnanet.vn/webdichvu/en-US/29/Default.aspx), Granma (http://granma.cu/ingles/index.html), and so on and so forth.

3) News sites like Al Jazeera (http://english.aljazeera.net/), Russia Today (www.rt.com), etc.

I think reading any of these from time to time is a great addition to the imperialist perspectives that get punched into your head on a daily basis.

Indymedia can be good, depending on your locality, sometimes it is just rubbish though.

I set up a portal with progressive news sources, currently available here (http://wikilution.info/index.php/Portal:Politics).

i suppose the real answer is that there isn't one.

although all suppliers of TV news provide the images without the commentary

to make a leftie news network you need to do what cnn bbc fox etc do. get the images from APTN or Reuters and put your own analysis over the top of the pictures

this could be done maybe

Should use multiple sites, here's a few I use:

democracynow.org
english.aljazeera.net
commondreams.org
zcommunications.org
haaretz.com
presstv.com
therealnews.com/t/

Also use cbc.ca, bbc.com, etc. mainstream news.

Democracy Now!
DN are left-liberal progressives, and while they provide a refreshing alternative to the likes of the BBC they are most certainly not a socialist news site.

Unfortunately no big socialist news website exists..

I find the huffington post to be pretty decent, as it is updated regularly and it has a predominantly progressive stance to it. Of course it isn't really too far to the left, but as far as reliable and frequently updated news sources go it is quite good.

i like BBC. sometimes they seem to drift a bit to the left, while ususally holding a neutral stance. but Al Jazeera suites me best. They aren't really left wing but the wrting style appeals to me the most.

I highly recommend Democracy Now!It's the best Left-wing news program. I would also suggest, as some already have Huffington Post, Al-Jazeera English, the Real News Network, and Truthdig.

I hate the shit out of the Huffington Post.

In some respects, at the very least, I think it's better than CNN's site. Although, admittedly, Huffington Post is, technically, more of a news aggregator.

I didn't notice anybody else mention the Real News network, for anybody who hasn't seen it, it's worth a look.

alternet.org is usually pretty good for liberal progressive views - great coverage of the Wisconsin situation thus far
reddit.com/r/socialism is a conglomerate of socialist news from around the world
dailykos.com is a somewhat liberal progressive blog

DN! is kinda shit. Sure, I'm in favor of reformism but Amy gives softball interviews to so-called leftist leaders. Avoids being confortational except those she conciders on the 'Right'.

Truth of the matter is that there isn't a news site that strictly looks out for the working class. The only ppl that can save the working class is the working class themselves, yes?

So news programmes should be impartial and give equal airtime to those for genocide, torture etc. as those who are against those things?

No, but getting news directly from the press agencies before anyone has had a chance to put a hefty slant on them is probably the best way to go. News should be facts, you know; such and such amount of people died today in this place because this happened; So-and-so said this today in a speech here, etc etc. Like how it used to be before they started trying to jazz it up with CGI and scare stories - so pretty boring, but useful.

I guess if there's no proper place for news with a left slant you can just get the basic who-what-where-when info from AP or something (all the other ones just copy stuff from them anyway) and then go to a lefty site for the analysis and comment.

Although it's not left-wing specific, Counterfire.org (http://www.counterfire.org/)is quite good, and if you want a radio station - yes, I'm that daring - I'd suggest Thinking Liberty (http://thinkingliberty.net/).
