I'm a non-religious man. I detest it yet I tolerate it and accept my family and friends who have religious views. If they so care to listen to my reasons why I don't need it and why I think it's not essential to life thats cool with me!

However I don't know if I speak for any of you, but I feel like I give catholics and christians way more "shit" than I do muslims or jews... Is it because that's what I know? Roman Catholicism and Christianity? Do any of you ever find your selves being more accepting and not so quick to judge a religious muslim over a christian (if you were raised christian) and vise versa?

If you read around the forum here at various post, it's pretty safe to say that we sympathize a lot more with muslims.. Why? cus of Palestine? at the end of the day they still are religious and we don't seem to come down on them as harsh as we come down on christian or catholic loons....

Muslims are usually attacked by rightist Christians in the West, so it makes sense to side with them on political issues. However that doesn't mean we should treat Islam any less critically because really, it's just as silly as Christianity.

Take the veil issue in France. Naturally I'm opposed to the ban because it's obviously a racist distraction from real issues, but I do agree with the French government's position that the veil is a symbol of oppression.

I think it's almost as simple as Christianity being more "in your face" in the West, and Islam/other religions having this "greener on the other side" effect.

I would say that I criticize christians more harshly. This may seem ignorant and one-sided, but I think that the notion that "religion is the opium of the masses" applies with more relevancy to Muslims in, for example, the middle-east at this time in history, than it does to the christians I know in the west.

I oppose all forms of religion, but I can understand how a child in Palestine may grow up to be influenced by the teachings of Islam when their homes and schools are being bulldozed, and there are a fighting force of Islamic freedom fighters that speak directly to them - it is a direct reflection of the oppression they bear, and while it is regrettable that people may be influenced in this way, it is also understandable when we analyse religion in the Marxist context. This does not apply to the kinds of white middle-class christians I speak to and debate with where I live, so therefore I naturally tend to empathize with Muslims more that Christians. That said, I do not hold Islam in a higher regard to Christianity and I would criticize them both equally as damaging, backward ideologies, I just think there are obvious differences with regards to international social and economic contexts that do tend to make the left side with one religious demographic more than the other.

Something like 80% of the population in the US is religious.

"Is it because that's what I know?"

Likely, yes. Formerly-religious people often feel hostile, justifiably so, towards their old religion. Thus, they dislike it more than other religions, and attack it more fiercely. You should avoid doing this, but it's natural and to be expected.

So many are deluded by their invisible sky-man it's ridiculous. While I loathe all religions quite equally I tend to focus more of my hatred on christians (catholics specifically).I think it's because of the degree of hypocrisy that they practice. How many homosexuals,bisexuals,transsexuals/transgendered and african american people have to suffer discrimination and violent assult (Murder in many cases) before they let up and give them equality?
