(07-17) 14:22 PDT OAKLAND-- Oakland and BART police officers shot and killed a man this morning near the Fruitvale BART station after an alleged confrontation with police, authorities said.
Details about the shooting were still emerging, but authorities said the man was armed with a knife and threatened officers.
The shooting happened at about 8:15 a.m. in the 1500 block of 33rd Avenue, a few blocks from the Fruitvale BART station.
Three Oakland officers and two BART officers were involved in the shooting, although it's unclear how many fired their weapons, Oakland police Officer Rob Messier said.
None of the officers was injured. The man was pronounced dead at the scene.
The Fruitvale BART station was the site of the highly publicized Jan. 1, 2009, shooting of unarmed train rider Oscar Grant by BART police Officer Johannes Mehserle. Grant was killed as he lay facedown on the platform. A Los Angeles jury convicted Mehserle of involuntary manslaughter July 8 rather than a more serious murder charge, which touched off protests and unrest in Oakland.
